The Ćevapi files: Sydney FC in the NPL1

Looks like they’re still working on the outside, but it looks mostly done externally.

Time for Nathan Paull to at least get a look in for next season?

Is that Ally Brown on the program?

Yes. Moved to play NPL1. Still involved at Tigers in a coaching capacity.

Scenes. You love to see it:

Our boys up to 4th, can be jumped on GD by St George City this arvo, but they’ve got a tough game away to Rockdale.

Next Friday at Valentine is pencilled in. There is no off season.

No JK. FML.

Pava

Fong Gurd Paull Adamson (LB?)

Oscar Scarcella
Sega

Gibson Smyth Taylor

Down 1-0 after 40 seconds, cheap turnover from Segecic outside the box.

It’s been all us, Pava’s only had one, maybe two other saves to make since the opener and Marconi have barely crossed half way.

Very much 4-3-3 with Sega at 10. He’s maybe tried a little too hard to make amends, gone himself a few times when he could’ve / should’ve played in others.

Smyth has been really good as the big unit # 9, always presents and offers great vision and some lovely touches in the buildup. Scarcella again impressive in the middle and I continue to think he’s surpassed Oscar. Oscar has been captain for yonks so obvs highly rated, for me he’s always seemed like Retre-lite, dependable enough but too often goes sideways or backwards. Scarcella is like Hof-lite by comparison, better touch, better passing range, but more importantly always seems more willing to play forward quickly.

Jordi Swibel up front for Marconi after being spat out by Wests. Liam McGing is at CB for them too.

Superb equaliser, 1-1 just after HT.

Smyth with that buildup, lovely ball wide to Gibson, he slipped in Oscar who made a driving run into the box and delivered a lovely cross. Who had Sega with a towering header?

Aaand 2-1 Marconi. Pava drops a regulation cross cold for a tap in.

Was a fantastic equaliser, but an absolute howler to concede again.

2-1 loss. Marconi didn’t really make many mistakes that we could capitalise on.

No way in hell we deserved to lose that, bossed the entire game, even more so after Jimmy pulled the right reigns again and switched to a back 3 just after the hour mark. Oscar showed his Retre-like versatility filling in at wingback, we lost very little in the middle with Schreiber and Agosti coming on, and we were able to get Taylor more and more into the game with some good early switches of play.

Shame Smyth came off, maybe made sense with the change of shape and not needing to go long into him as often, but Harbas was less effective than him at 9 tonight. Taylor superb in the second half, I could honestly watch him skin cunts all winter long.

JK was there watching. As was Paul Reid who was rather unimpressed with Marconi carrying on like pork chops at the final whistle. They dead set got away with the biggest smash and grab against 20yo’s and carried on like they won a cup final.

Result and two shitty uncharacteristic goals conceded aside, some really, really good football. Bit worried about what this side is going to look like in a month though. There’s an insider on twitter saying 4 or 5 of them have offers on the table. If one is Oscar then good luck to him, with JGR, Scarcella, Schreiber and Agosti the middle of the park will be fine. But the next best of this lot (first team deals excl.) would have to be Taylor, Scarcella and Paull who’d all be massive losses and would send me postal if we lost them all. Maybe Smyth or Harbas too, although they’re still raw and maybe a longer shot for a first-team ALM deal elsewhere at this stage.

Strong rumours that both Priestman and Harbas are going to WSW.
I’m guessing that Pat Wood could be another moving on given he’s out of contract.

I wouldn’t be surprised if JK moves on as well. He’s only on a scholarship deal and really hasn’t seen the game time that his NPL performances last season deserved.

Tough one. I’m a huge fan, kid is a bit special, but he’s also had a few injury niggles incl. an MCL in the last 12 months that have hindered him. Then also now that we’ve binned the box midfield, his best spot is probably at 9 where he’s obviously behind ALF and Wood, but also apparently Mak.

Saw him heading for the car post-game last night and he wasn’t moving super freely. Was genuinely trying to work out if he was limping or if it was just too fucking cold for those slides. :joy:

RE: Harbas, would be a shame to lose him, he’s been good and has definitely bulked up a bit. But really don’t see him getting anywhere near their ALM side ahead of Borrello or a new 9. He’d most likely be duking it out with Sapsford and Blair at NPL level, and could potentially end up with less minutes there than here where he’s really only had Smyth to share minutes with. Of the two, tough call, but I’d lean to Smyth being the bigger loss.

NPL TV, 4pm this arvo, away to Olympic.

Guaranteed to be a better quality stream than the FA Cup Final on P+.

Same side, 4-3-3 with Sega at 10.

Scenes again. Jimmy changing games as only Jimmy can, we came from 1-0 down and barely functioning (well below the last effort where we bossed Marconi) to equalise in the 87th and then steal it in the 89th.

Olympic’s opener was a Parkhouse cross to Roy OD, he brought it down at the back stick and then volleyed it back across inside the far post. Our equaliser was a cracking grass-cutter from Oscar, outside the box with his left peg and in off the far post. Just after that Harbas rounded the keeper but failed to convert into the empty net because he didn’t lift it, Micky Neill slid in to save it and knock it out for a corner. So just when it looks like we blew the chance to steal it we score from the corner anyways, nodded back from the back post and big Nathan Paull buried the second header.

We were second best for most of it but makes up for last week. Oscar 2.0 (very young Oscar Fryer from the 18’s) was very impressive off the bench in his NPL debut.

5 whole minutes of highlights is a stretch but probably worth it for the goals. We did indeed ride our luck.

Nice goals and comeback but wow, our defence looks shaky in these highlights.

Like that kid Burgess from Olympic though!

Missed last weekends game as it clashed with my own, 2-1 loss to CCM for whom Nathan Paull made a debut off the bench and played against us for the last 20 minutes.

Definite ‘new batch’ feel to this team sheet, with Scarcella the only contracted / scholarship player getting a run and Gibson probably the next most senior:
