Eddie Jordan has passed away
Boo
May Eddie Jordan join Murray Walker in the clouds, where Murray calls him Eddie Irvine in random moments.
Eddie Jordan was a real character in a period of F1 that otherwise had an overwhelming tide of dull personalities in the paddock.
It was good that he got his life back on track after the Rumble in the Jungle⦠as great as Ali was, he really pschologically tortured him. Ruthless.
Also, apparently big George called all his boys āGeorgeā so he only had to remember one name.
Edit. If anyone hasnt seen When We Were Kings then please do so. One of the best sports documentaries of all time
Yeah, When we were Kings is a great doco. We were probably the last generation where boxing was a big sport - I remember watching fights as a very young kid with my old man, and there was appreciation of the craft, grit, tactics, etc. once the money/show became the main thing, it was the beginning of the end for boxing. Totally unfounded, but feels like cage fighting is much bigger these days, but more of a disposable sport - not sure if thereās household names like Ali, Sugar Ray, Hearns, Duran, Frazier, Holmes. Foreman⦠Tyson probably the last great
I see this as I came off the field for my sons under 10 game
Made me think long and hard about the impact boxing had on me as a kid of his age.
Foreman was a genuine great (not used lightly) and will be sorely missed
I think the problem with boxing is that there are far too many organisations and weight divisions so there are far too many belts available. Throw in the interim belts and just about anyone can walk around claiming to be a champion or belt holder.
I know there are multiple MMA competitions as well but anyone with even a passing interest knows that UFC is the pinnacle. With boxing though, unless youāre a diehard fan, who knows what organisation is the pinnacle for a particular weight class.
Blatant corruption certainly hasnāt helped either. Itās hard to remain invested in a sport where judges are routinely bought off and produce scorecards that do not reflect the actual fight. Just about every card has at least one mind blowing decision that continues to erode the integrity and credibility of the sport.
āGrilling Magnateā. FFS.
As far as I know, he got paid millions for letting a company use his name to endorse a sloped electric grill appliance that was primarily sold on TV shopping channels.
I guess you donāt need to be involved at all in the ideation, design or production of a product to be considered a āmagnateā.
(Not a dig at George - more power to him. Rather, a dig at the nytimes)
This is definitely the biggest problem, but then it comes down to anyone running one of the boxing organizations just wanting the extra money for themselves. Im passively into boxing and Iāve got no clue which are main orgs to watch, iāll just follow one or two fighters, check out their fights and accept the wider boxing world is fucking confusing
I always though the issue was the brazen manipulation of the ranking system to promote whatever brain-dead fuckwit was getting the most social media traction. Boxers fighting paid shills to endlessly pad stats and build fake hype to position themselves for big paydays, and ātopā fighters studiously avoiding each other lest one or the other expose themselves for the hacks they are.
The introduction of social media arseholes and then crossovers with McGregor is generally just icing on the cake. Everyone is after a payday and I dare say most boxers donāt have the sense to invest their money while fighting. People like Jake and Logan Paul are just screwing up the sport even more. Youāre definitely correct in that none of the big names want to fight each other, but then throw in the Pauls, how run their mouths off, claim theyāre the greatest thing in boxing and then decide to go up against literal grandfathers. Your regular off the street viewer is going to scoff at that, rather than getting interested. Itās the same as the A-League All Stars and all the other crap that gets served up.
Sport is more and more becoming controlled by media companies dictating games, rather than actual sports people that love if for the sport itself.
Humans can do extraordinary things when they collaborate.
Vale the Iceman.
Tombstone was his best work, hell of a role.
Not a story I was expecting to read, RIP indeed.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a very underrated movie.
Deniz Tek is still alive.
