The greatest moral challenge of our generation thread

St Pauli make you pay €1 for a plastic half stein which you take back for a refill. It is player-themed so I took two home with me. Not sure if you get a refund at the end of the game, or they just pick them up and use them again

Germany has a big thing on a refundable deposits anyways.

I haven’t read the actual package, but this doesn’t sound too encouraging

• Volunteer becomes eligible to claim for days on the fire line after fighting fires for 10 days - cannot claim for first 10 days, can only claim for days after the first 10

• Can only claim for those hours fighting the fires within normal working hours e.g. if a firefighter fought fire for 18 hours on one day and only 4 of the 18 hours were within the volunteer’s normal working day, then can only claim for those 4 hours

• If a firefighter made up the hours away from work by working at night or on the weekend, or received payment from their employer, then cannot claim those hours

• Must prove loss of income

Compensation:

• Volunteer can only claim a daily rate commensurate with their normal daily wage, after tax, up to a maximum of $300

• If a volunteer works part time and they fought a fire on days that they do not normally work, then they cannot claim for those days

• If a volunteer is retired, then they cannot claim any days

• If a volunteer is a primary producer then they must be able to prove that if they had stayed home on the days they fought the fire, they would have made money

Shits me when you get plastic cups in pubs pre game.

Yeah, it’s common throughout the Bundesliga, concerts and some bars in Germany. You do get the deposit back at the end of the game (only annoying thing is the line), but a lot of people just keep the cup and bring it to the game next time so they don’t have to queue. It’s good as well as it creates a souvenir (as you discovered).

We paid €1 to rent proper glass Hofbrau steins at the English Garden in ‘06 (think it was England / Sweden at the Fansfest). But didn’t want to lug the bloody thing around Schwabing all night, so got the refund and then proceeded to buy an identical souvenir one from the Hofbrauhaus direct for about €25 the next day.

I’m an idiot.

You pay 5 pound at Glastonbury for a stainless steel pint cup that you can hand back for a refund at the end or just keep.

I guess the throwing of non plastic cups is the real risk

Who throws cups anymore? One bottle gets pegged at a ref and everyone goes nuts.

It wasn’t a proper game unless the ref was barraged with half the drinking receptacles in the ground back in the NSL.

Disagree, studies have shown that aggressively attacking someone for these sorts of views actually works against them and makes people more defensive and less likely to change their views. You’re also sinking to their level as anti-vacc and climate deniers aggressively attack people for views against theirs as well.

Does this mean we can’t start calling coal miners welfare budgets? :frowning:

No chance, Corporate Welfare = Good, Personal Welfare = Bad.

So how else would you go about changing people’s points of view on this? “You can’t do anything” is not an acceptable answer, given the price that Australia is paying now of ignorance and inaction.

Someone described these bushfires as our environmental “Sandy Hook” moment. If we don’t take corrective steps now, we will never make them.

Sorry about being so cynical.

Well nothing happened after Sand Hook besides people denying that it happened in the first place.

Very interesting.

Doesn’t work - they just call you a ‘Doomer’ or something equally ridiculous. They believe everything is going to be fine.

They’re beyond saving, and deserving of no more than ridicule as far as I’ concerned.

I work on the north shore and just saw the world’s most north shore woman order a coffee specifically in a takeaway cup to drink while sitting in the cafe.

That’s fine. I was actually responding to Paulska as a genuine question.

So if we are to go on the second group “template” (for lack of a better word) that Paulska’s link provides, how can that then be translated to converting climate change skeptics to at least accepting we are contributing to global warming and that we should do something about it?

part of it would be simply using the argument, “what harm is there in trying to move away from fossil fuels?” and then you could continue in discussing how we’ll run out of coal and oil no matter what and continue from there.

Considering the demographic, throw in some anti-american/anti-arab/anti-russian stuff and bob’s you uncle
