Thankfully my kids are all Sydney fans first (youngest went to his first game this year at 5)… my eldest (12) even braved the cold to come to Gosford for the second leg of the semi final.
They all have favourite players (Bellingham/Messi) etc but don’t favour any other teams…
It’s interesting because I was raised as a North Sydney Bears supporter, my Dad got memberships for us and took us to most home games and the occasional away game. The Bears never really achieved much and most of my childhood mates were into Manly or various other more successful clubs. I remember in primary school there was pressure to follow better clubs but I just stuck to my principles and told others that I at least went to a lot of games, whereas most of them didn’t. It didn’t really turn out that great I guess, North Sydney dropped out of the NRL years later. But you know what, to this day, I don’t follow any other clubs, I basically lost interest in the NRL once my team was out.
Interestingly enough, it kinda led me to discovering football (the world game) and I just started following that instead.
I started following Sydney FC in 2010 after going to my first game, and I 100% won’t follow any other Australian team. Even if there was a team that was established in my local area, I wouldn’t follow them.
Years ago, me and a mate were having a beer in the Newington Inn in front of the telly and an NRL game happen to be on. This old fella started talking to us about how he doesn’t follow anymore since Newtown left the comp.
We told him they were playing again and he still wouldn’t have a bar of it!
Took the day off work today to spend some time with my kids and the nephews (Grandma came to help). We went to Centennial Park to enjoy the sunshine and randomly found the massive jumping castle obstacle course there. Highly recommended, especially if you go early. It was pretty much empty at 10am. Think we paid $140 for 4 people (so not cheap), but you get 1.5hrs unlimited access. The only think i’ll say, if your kid is 3, you need to go on with them. I did the long one 5 times and I feel like i’ve just done the City to Surf…
To anyone with kids at that age where sitting through a movie is slightly too long, highly recommend Hoyts Junior. There’s one at Macquarie Centre. Theres a playground at the front of the theatre so the kids can play around before hand. Then a 10 minute break in the middle for toilet breaks and a bit more playing. Took my oldest yesterday (3.5 years) and she loved it!
Our whole house has the flu. It knocks you round badly enough as it is, but looking after badly sick kids on top is nearly impossible. The poor things.
Had this two weeks ago - was the sort of flu/cold where me nor the wife could barely get out of bed for three days and had to look after the two little ones who had it, just not as bad thankfully. Hope yours a feeling better soon
Coaching my sons under 8 team this weekend for the first time as the coach can’t make it… it is such a nothing thing but the look on my sons face when I told him - he looked like he just couldn’t believe it and then started celebrating like I just told him he had won every toy in the world. Got to say - it was a good feeling to see him so happy over something that I hadn’t put a lot of thought into… they never cease to surprise.
I took my 9 year olds training session last night… he never really saw me play, aside from a couple of trundles at over 45’s last year so it was great to be able to show him that I do know what I am talking about and can actually play the game.
On that note, besides one of the dads in the team I talk to- the other parents don’t have a clue that I am a ‘football person’ and I only took it on as nobody else put their hand up. I get the impression that they think I dont know anything about football as one offered for their 13 year old son who plays soccer to help me - I have accepted this offer of help.
Here is a question - the team we are playing tomorrow is the only team that has given us a lesson in playing this year. Our team is normally coached by two young girls who are good players and do a great job, but they haven’t ever put the boys ‘in positions’ etc. This team dusted us up because they sat two kids upfront and just booted it to them ( alot of teams do this as there is no offside) - I was going to be bold and actually try and have the boys in some loose form of postions - at least make sure two are always at the back - good or bad idea???
Even modern professionals talk more about individual “roles” than positions.
If you’re going to do it, I’d steer away from trying to have rigid structures and positions, etc and focus more on each player knowing what their job is.
