And I think it will be forgotten very quickly that he was on track for Q1 if Hamilton didn’t spin.
Fine margins for pole, even finer for keeping your seat.
Tomorrow’s race is looking very good. If only the regs weren’t changing at the end of the season.
F1 is always going to struggle between its desire to be the forefront of technical innovation and the need for its racing to be competitive between teams. I guess we’ll have to enjoy this season while it lasts because 2026 is unlikely to be this close.
Colapinto looks like he has some options… Wonder how tight that alpine contract is or whether they will be happy to ship him elsewhere? Surely alpine have to look after Doohan or their young driver program is cooked? Or will there always be someone desperate enough…
At least if Doohan gets booted but has impressed a little he can surely end up in bearmans seat
The thing is Alpine have paid Williams to sign him on loan for 2 years. They wouldn’t have done that if they don’t intend on maximising his sponsorship potential to recoup that outlay, something that will only occur if he is racing. Alpine and his sponsors will want him in the seat for the Miami GP.
I can’t see Doohan being able to stop that short of overachieving in the car and getting a couple of top 5 finishes. I think he’s just going to have to take his medicine and sit out the season as the test driver again. Lucky for him there are plenty of rookies this year and I can’t imagine Lawson and Bearman will be long for their seats if this weekend so far is any indication.
Lawson not super familiar with the track, and lost out in FP3 due to a hardware error. Could put his error down to just not having Albert park laps under his belt. If he can’t get it to together early in the season though he is going to be in real danger of losing his seat.
I think the lack of track time is a bit overdone. While they can’t replicate the experience 100% the simulators they have these days are so good that they’re using them in between practice sessions to chase setups.
There’s no way the Liam Lawson or any of the other drivers who haven’t raced at the track before haven’t clocked 100’s of laps of the track in the simulator.
Th camera on Antonelli’s car with the gyroscope is interesting, if a little off putting.
It rolls opposite to the centrifugal force (which is good for demonstrating the amount of force), but it’s opposite to the way you would lean your head/helmet into the corner, so it feels like the car is leaning way off-camber.
