The TV Show Thread

The books are great. Far more substantial than the show, which I am also enjoying now as a pulpy, violent yet YA-feeling adaptation.

They can be a slog at times and Jordan died before he could complete the last book. So Brendan Sanderson took over and it was split across three volumes in the end. Lots of unfinished threads but a pretty amazing series overall. I started reading them as a kid so not sure how much of that is nostalgia/sunk cost.

I recently did an audiobooks run through the whole series again. There were new ones being made with Rosamund Pike doing the narration. They are pretty good actually but she’s only done 4 or 5 so far so the rest I had to switch to the older versions.

i started the Dune series but have such a hard time to finish the second prequal book. It’s just REALLY dragging on and was worried about the Wheel of Time being similar enough. Maybe I will get the first one and give it a go. I read the prequal that focuses on Moiraine’s beginning which was really good.

I mean the arc is long but the first few books have pretty decent pacing. The real slog doesn’t start until later on (say books six to ten).

If you liked the prequel, definitely give it a go. The series is far from perfect but it’s probably my favourite creative work.

Read Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune then pretend no other books were written.

S10 of Aussie Gold Hunters & the most impressive nugget found by far in all the seasons is Jacqui Buzetti.

Disney Plus have basically every season of Air Crash investigation.

Love it.

#1 lesson of that show is never fly with an airline that is or has just expanded rapidly.

Alan Joyce must be disappointed having done his best for them to commission a Qantas episode.

Id be worried about rapid decompression more so

It was always going to see big changes given the length of the story, not to mention the amount of characters etc.
First season was a real mess, second season was good, third was really good.
They’re conflating certain characters and arcs but it’s good fun now.

Just watched The Final Quarter on NITV. Highly recommend giving it a watch.

Fuck some people are absolute oxygen thieves. Andrew Bolt and Miranda Devine are horrible, horrible people. Great reminder of what an absolute weapon Goodes was too.

I’ve tried to get through that one but the non stop barrage of clips from smug, disingenuous, slimy media types is just horrific. This time I got to the section after Goodes won Australian of the year and the tone of the morning/sunday show types made me turn it off before my face exploded. The man deserves infinite respect for putting up with that lot beyond anything else he’s experienced in his life.

Those early clips of Sam Fuckface… that he had a mainstream media career for that long is an indictment on this country.

The Good Mothers is pretty good, brutal though. Discovered it after reading about Camorra on wiki and going into a massive wiki hole about the different mafias.

I just finished Landman, generally a good and entertaining show. Billy Bob just has a great screen presence.

The downsides were generally the way they portrayed women.
The wife was just a basic gold digger and every screen time involving her made me zone out with a lack of interest.
The dad daughter relationship was nice, but she was too much of a mum in training to just catch a successful guy and leach off him the rest of your life.
What year is this, or maybe this is just Texas, anyway I hated that stuff.
Then there was the corporate lawyer lady who they just had to make angry all the time because she was making all the men know how good she is, the way her character was written was too simplistic.
And lastly the Latino widow who instantly shacked up with the little puppy boy son who mowed her lawn and showed her how to read her bills, I mean come on.

I’m kind of glad I didn’t watch this with my wife because I know she would have complained about all this stuff.

Taylor Sheridan has a habit of making good shows with terrible writing for women characters.

You didn’t think the one per episode jarringly out of context, clearly sponsored ā€œOil is great, renewables are terribleā€™ā€ speech crammed into some otherwise innocuous scene was a negative?

I really enjoyed Landman. Must say I’m really enjoying Taylor Sheridans stuff at the moment.

I really enjoyed the wife’s efforts in the nursing home.
