"Time to kick ass and chew bubblegum ..." - The Gamer Thread

I also saw F1 23 as a free download so I grabbed it last night. Its not bad, but honestly it feels arcadey and amateurish compared to something like ACC. ACC is a true achievement. Amazing graphics and brilliant physics, though it is a game I feel is only done full justice with a proper steering wheel and pedals.

I bought F1 22 on PS4 and it was only playable with a wheel and peddles.

No idea how anyone would get enjoyment out of a game like that using only a controller.

The reviews for F1 23 suggested that the controller experience had improved, and I’m inclined to agree. I also agree you can’t get the fine control a steering wheel can give. I need to replace my pedals, though, as they are rubbish and ruin the experience.

I finished AC2 yesterday and started Brotherhood.

So of course AC Rogue and Dishonoured arrived today.

And I’ve already adapted back to the old combat system for Assassins Creed …

Yeah I found that I needed a few weeks in between replaying some of the AC games to get rid of that muscle memory for all the different types of combat styles. Hardest was going from Black Flag to Syndicate and then to any of the other ones.

I really rate Dishonoured highly though. Especially as its replayability is very high. You can range from a hack and slash, to a proper stealth game and there’s long term repercussions for either one.

Yeah, I think I’ll do Brotherhood and Revelations, then Dishounoured, then Rogue.

Assuming I don’t get over gaming at some point in all of that and shelve it all for a few years as per my usual methodology.

I really struggled with Dishonour, just didn’t sit right with me in terms of mechanics.

I’ve given 1 and 2 a good crack and have come away with the same feeling.

I don’t know what it is exactly, it’s a vague “doesn’t feel good”.

They’re definitely not easy to get used to but I guess each to their own! Out of interest, did you treat them as more of an assassin type game, or more so a hack and slash?

Definitely a stealth game, but standing around for 10 mins at a time watching slow moving guards to spot a gap to move through is not my idea of a good time. I tried the kicky-fucky approach but got slaughtered almost as soon as I progressed any distance.

Yeah fair enough. It’s definitely a game of patience. Although if you watch some of the stealth runs on youtube, some people get scarily good at it.

Anyone playing Manor Lords? Is it worth the purchase or just wait till the final game is out?

It looks great but the impression is that its very bare bones at the moment and is only developed by one person.

My understanding is that he’s gotten assistance from other complex city-builders at the moment. There’s the team that made some sort of Soviet Union city builder with a ridiculously complex management system that are apparently assisting.

In saying that, I’m loving the story of his missus. She told him he’d be lucky to get 7,000 people on the Steam Wishlist. He hit 2,000,000 by January…

Workers & Resources? That looked great but agreed the complexity was a bit of a stumbling block.

I think that’s the one. My boss plays it and showed me how it works. Very much about some absolutely mental management systems.

I’m playing it, it’s very much unfinished. If you like city builders, its pretty good but so much of the tech tree is unfinished.

This game sounds like the exact sort of thing I’d buy fully intending to get into it but never play more than two hours because it’s just so clunky.

I’ve been enjoying Manor Lords. Yeah it’s a bit bare bones at this point but it’s certainly the hardest city builder I’ve played in a really interesting and challenging way (not counting dwarf fortress which lives in a category of its own for me). The fact it’s throwing itself fully into the agricultural simulation side of things is really great and really differentiates it from almost every other city builder, including the medieval ones.

Am I right in thinking it’s essentially a more in-depth version of Lord of the Realm from back in the day?

I started Dishonored last night.

Watch a play through of the first mission tonight.

It’s going to be a learning curve!
