2020-21 SFCU Player of the Season (voting thread)

Joel King won MOTM in his very first appearance for Sydney FC, and he finally got his second in his 59th appearance — the SCG derby. He is the 10th different player to win one this season.

There was a nice little bump in voting, don’t forget to get yours in for the win over Adelaide if you haven’t already:

Tough to vote for the Adelaide game. So many good performances.

Voting for Brisbane is open; a few more hours for last week’s Adelaide game as well

For big wins, it’s common for the points to be spread around, and that’s what happened in the Adelaide match: 8 of 31 voters gave one point each to six different players, and all of the starters got at least one. But there was one constant: Adam Le Fondre picked up points from all but two voters, earning him his first MOTM on his return, and the 9th of his SFC career.

ALF is the 11th different player to win a MOTM this season, but with the ACL withdrawal meaning a maximum of three matches remaining this season, I can’t lie and say it’s a close race for first. But below that, anyone down to 13th can mathematically take second spot!

So make your vote count for these last few games, starting with the win over Brisbane, if you haven’t already:

Result for the win over Brisbane – Tom Heward-Belle took a clean sheet and clear MOTM in his first appearance of the season. It’s the second MOTM of his Sydney FC career, having also won one in his only appearance in 2018–19 (the loss to Kawasaki two days after the GF). He’s the 12th different player to win MOTM this season.

Only one or two games left to determine the player of the season, so keep an eye out for voting to open after Saturday’s semi.

Surely that puts him near the top of the MotM per game ratio?

It does indeed… 2 MOTM from 6 appearances (33%) or from 5 starts (40%) for THB are the highest of anyone in either category.

Next best is Adrian, with 11 MOTM from 34 appearances (32%), or 31 starts (35%). So he’ll need to keep it up if he wants to stay there…

God that really points out how amazing he was here.

Especially as we had god mode Ninkovic, god mode Bobo and god mode Brosque at the same time…

There’s a bit of novelty bias in our voting, so part of it is probably leaving before being here long enough to be taken for granted.

Kosta and king got love from me this week

Result for the semi-final: Joel King got his second MOTM of the season, picking up points from 34/37 voters. His final tally of 66 points (1.78 per voter) was pretty much the same as his other MOTM in the derby, when he got 68 points at 1.79 per voter.

Thanks as always to everyone who has voted. The last voting of the season will of course open tonight after the Grand Final. Not gonna lie, first place isn’t up-for-grabs anymore, but five(!) different players are still in contention for second with just one game remaining.

Kosta gets 1 for the goal, Tommy 5 for being our only good player

Yeah I’m struggling to find a third player to give a point to

Brattan 6.

(with apologies to any old school no nonsense types for bringing XG into it…)

Defense held on grimly and so did OK to the extent that some should be worty of a point or so in MOTM. They actually only ended up getting less than 3 XG including the penalty, so we weren’t giving up too many huge chances. That open header at 1-1 was probably the only real carve up, others were just scrambled half chances. Managing to take a 1 goal deficit to a point where we could have put 3-4 pairs of fresh legs on and rolled the dice was a great effort by them.
But on the converse, our own XG was around 0.1 reflecting that our ability to create was abysmal.

Wilko is normally my go to player if I need a player to give points to but we shipped 3 goals tonight although none his fault I guess. King should have done better for their first goal
