Results for the Rd 1 loss to Melbourne: Robert Mak ended Adrian Segecic’s MOTM streak, picking up points from 41 of 44 voters at an average of exactly 2 votes each. Second place wasn’t far behind, but the votes were very concentrated among a small number of players: 7 players picked up 0 votes, with another two getting just 1 vote each.
Weirdly we have had exactly 44 voters in 3 of the 4 matches this season. And there have been 44 votes submitted so far for Round 2 vs Western United (including the @Sky_Blue_Stories guys on today’s pod). If you want to help break this streak and set a new record for the season, now’s your chance:
Result for Round 2 vs Western United: 49 voters is the highest number we’ve had since Round 1 last season, and they almost all agreed on the best performers: only 5 voters didn’t give points to both of the top two players (one voter, who might’ve watched the wrong match, gave none to either). Unlike last match, every starting player picked up at least one vote.
In the end the winner was Joe Lolley, taking his first MOTM with Sydney FC. He’s the third different winner this season.
Not a huge number of votes so far for Round 3 vs Adelaide. Get yours in here:
Joe Lolley took his second consecutive MOTM in the home draw with Adelaide.
There was a tie for first in the away win over Macarthur: Robert Mak and Patrick Wood both got 53 votes, so they get 2.5 points each for the Player of the Season tally.
First game of the season I didn’t get to watch, and I will not be sitting through a replay of that one even for the sacred duty of the player of the match vote. Sorry to Rowdy for that.
I thought Lolley was the pick, for at least trying to drag the game kicking and screaming into life for us.
Mak was struggling against their RB and actually came into the game when moved into the centre al lot more.
Brattan has the right attitude, but his legs just can’t carry him to be both playmaker and main cover.
It was Mak. I watch the mini again and Mak did some good things early in the 2nd half but to me he made a lot of poor decisions including a lazy shot that led to the transition that led to their goal. Lolley always seemed to be able to make space and play the correct ball including a number of good switches to a player in space on the other side of the field.
For the Round 5 away loss to Brisbane, Rhyan Grant won his first MOTM since March 2021, 50 appearances ago. He’s the fifth different winner this season.
