Itās not even close.
This is a team that out performs its expectation by a lot. They find ways to win despite their relative lack of quality.
Thatās a great trait to have, but peak Sydney was unbearably good.

Yeah, itās a shame this Mariners team wonāt be able to give the ACL a proper crack. The defensive solidity with Kaltak, Hall and Vuka, and ability to get goals somehow wouldāve held them in good stead to compete way better than Aussie teams in the last decade. But if theyāre going to be gutted again losing Nizzy, Farrell and who knows who elseā¦

Absolutely. So good in fact that fans of other teams started this bogus narrative that we were a boring team to watch. Yeah, i guess its boring watching your team getting relentlessly outplayed week in week out by a winning machine. Like most here iām biased but thats still the best a-league team ive seen.
Angeās Roar and this Mariners team have an argument though. Tremendous achievement from them this season.

CCM currently have a team thatās very good at winning, but probably isnāt the most exciting to watch. Theyāll sometimes produce good football, but its the physical attributes and work rate that stand out. Theyāre definitely the most successful Aussie club over a single season, but definitely NOT the best. Sydney 2016-17 and Angeās Brisbane would kill this CCM team.
The critiques make me think how other teams thought of us in peak Arnie years. We dominated and bullied teams but never played trendy easy on the eye football. Marinerās similarly have not played the trendy football but still played ruthlessly effective football to come away with a treble and go back to back. Our best years had more flair players but the effectiveness of how the Mariners have gone is that its a sum way greater than its parts.
When you look at their scoring charts they have Angel Torres on 13, Kuol and Tulio on 5 and then Theoharous, Reec and Ballard on 3.
Assist wise theyve got Nisbet on 9, Doka 7 then Tulio on 4. then 4 players on 3.
Immensely impressive how spread out those stats are and how Tulio still near the top for goals and assists.
I think this is a great A-League team but you can appreciate them all for different things- Roar raising the standard and playing Roarcelona football, us under Arnie for how ruthless we used to dispose of teams and control games, and this Mariners team for how they worked together as such a unit and still did a treble despite losing a manager and key players and having an immense weekly travel load with the AFC cup.
