A-League Expansion

Ooooh boy this could be bad:

i still think the best way to get the smaller clubs involved is:

  1. 2 permanent places for state league clubs
  2. End of season play off between the different state leagues
  3. Top two get into A-league for a season
  4. Should any club fall within the bottom two in the a-league, they need to fight to stay in through the same play-off format.

Not a perfect system, but if you have clubs regularly finishing above a-league opposition then that would be a pretty strong case to have give them a license.

The main downside to this is that you will have the inevitable issues of having to upgrade stadiums etc to ensure they meet minimum a-league standards, but then you’d just have to ensure that there is a-league money going to the state clubs to allow them to do so.

Win-win, we have promotion and relegation, current a-league club owners will be placated as they can’t lose a top-league spot and stadiums in Australia slowly get upgraded.

Eibar in la liga has a stadium with a capacity of 7,000.
Spain has lots of things in place for non payment of wages, administrative relegations etc.

Its a shit load of work, need things in place so teams don t fry themselves with debt as they go up and down.

Expansion of the A-League is still on track for next year, but only if the incoming Football Federation Australia board can pick the two successful bids before the end of January.

If the new teams were to come in for next season, they would need to be prepared to play their first competitive games in July, as part of the FFA Cup’s round of 32.

Best part for mine is the following : “Team 11, based in south-east Melbourne, and Macarthur South West Sydney are understood to be the preferred bids of FFA management.” …
If Southern Expansion gets a guernsey, we’re in a lot of strife

Southern Expansion has been very quiet since the housing market started going south…

As much as Id love Canberra Id take Team 11 and Macarthur/SWS very happily

Agree with Team 11 and SW Sydney - Canberra can have Wellington’s licence in due time.

No more delays please.
Just let 2 in that are ready to go. I understand Canberra is. My second preference is Team 11, but they do have a ground issue. Who else is ready to go?
2 more, suitably scuitinized, can come in for the following season.

South Melbourne is the obvious one, but SW Sydney and Southern Expansion have grounds they could play at already.

Southern Expansion have three

If grounds is an issue go SWS and Canberra and tell team 11 they’re next in.

It sounds like a chicken and egg scenario though. They won’t get the funding if they’re not actually a club but to be a proper club they need the funding

Seems it’s still a go to get it done for next season, could come down to the dollars on the table to decide who gets the nod though.

Entry to the highest bidder it seems. That’s not exactly how we hoped it would go.

Southern Expansion is backed by Chinese investors isn’t it?

Anything but southern please

Maybe the Trump sanctions could have an effect there as has been suggested regarding the Jets’ ownership?
If that were to be the case, it could be the first positive effect of the tangerine scrote’s first term in office.

So who do we think the really high bidder is? One of the Melbourne teams is backed by Gerry Ryan right? He’d probably stump up some extra cash.

Conspiracy theory: Craig Foster was running for a board position which meant he’d have to step down from the Southern Expansion committee, but someone whispered in his ear that Southern Expansion would get the green light, so he withdrew so that he could see through with SE.

Canberra for the A-league

Looks like they’re doing the smart/obvious thing and teaming up with W-league team Canberra United.
