ACL2 SF - Sydney FC vs Lion City Sailors - 16/4/25

I got the sense from the post match presser that Lolley himself is the reason he’s been overplayed

The two most frustrating things for me:

  • Positioning both Sega and Lolley on on the left, when both of them have a solid record of scoring with their left foot, approaching from the right side of the box
  • The slow transition from defence to attack, with our players approaching the halfway mark and then stopping like it was some boundary they were told not to cross, holding up the play and looking for passing options, while simultaneously allowing the opponent’s defence time to form good structure, only to end up making a relatively non-effective pass.

The second point pretty much sums up our season to be honest, it’s been the same week in, week out.

Everyone would want to play all the time, but a good manager knows when a player needs a rest. Lolley hasn’t been the same since playing every minute of a 5-game streak within two weeks.

If one positive came from last night, is that he got back on the scoresheet.

Lolley came from the championship, they play way more games than us. I don’t think he’s as gassed as much as people think.

Agre he’s Slightly below form

He was also 3-4 years younger when he came here. I don’t think anyone is watching him thinking he has more in the tank come 60-70 mins, and some games he appears off the pace within 20-30 mins.

I can think of one person who definitely is…

You also find players who have relied on speed and fitness like him move central as they get older as they can’t keep up.

Whilst there were things that we could have done better, we were beaten by a better team. Singapore defended superbly and the two goals we conceded were absolute crackers.
