ALM Squad Speculation Thread 2024/25 (Part 1)

In the late 90s when I worked there, I’d get asked to clean the valve because of my long arms. Essentially I’d be arm deep in either softserve or shake mix, which was then meant to be drained afterwards. I’m sure there were a few rushes where we never did. Nothing like a bit of teenage boy sweat infusion with your cold creamy treats!

Thanks to that last post I just bought a tub from the supermarket for the first time in years.

So are we of the opinion the season isn’t going to be successful and we focus on youth without pressure?

Eh? Judging from the above posts about soft serve, I assumed we’d already decided the season was over and are back into off season discussions…

Speaking of, I visited the first Nandos in South Africa during my recent travels. It was the best chicken I’ve ever eaten. Far far greater than Frangos. Come at me Portuguese folx…

Nandos in SA is on a whole other level. I think the price made it even that more enjoyable. A whole bird and plenty of sides was under 20 bucks.

I had frangos last night and it was fucking awful. Cant believe they franchised and delivered such low quality food. Would rate oportos and ogalos much higher.

Where abouts? Franchising is always a death knell.

Campbellton.

I talked it up so much to my Portuguese food loving mrs, and was genuinely embarrased. It was just dry charcoal chicken with a tub of mayo/chilli and some unseasoned fries.

That’s the problem with franchising. You have people that for example do the charcoal grill for years, and you see it’s the same guy for 5, 10 years, then you’re suddenly opening half a dozen different places where you need to replicate someone with that experience or those skills. How easy can you get someone else in to do the same (while presumably paying them peanuts).
So you try to come up with replicable processes and standards, that any poorly trained disinterested kid can do.

El Jannah have done a good job of expansion while keeping the quality mostly good, but it will inevitably deteriorate as the original owners/operators time is more thinks spread. And even then their prices have increased 50% over 2-3 years

Anyhow, bringing it back to thread topic, I think our recruitment has been mostly shite since the Arnie days.

Frangos Edmonson Park is good. Didn’t know there was one in Campbelltown.

They have been opening a store in Crows Nest “soon” for about 6 months now.

Hurry up!

El Jannah sold to Chinese owners a while back. Not sure if someone bought them back though.

We had an amazing chicken shop near the in-laws in Hunters Hill. Chicken was stunning, salads, chips and everything that came with it. Was so good! They then sold it and moved to Putney. The new owners were regularly selling out of chicken by 6:00pm every day. I mean surely you’d be making sure there’s enough till 7/7:30pm for anyone coming back from work.

Boronia Park Charcoal Chicken?

If so it has been in the same family since the 90s took over and I am pretty sure Ciro still owns it, unless something changed since I was in there last year. Source I worked there in the halcyon days of about 2003/2004.

The Putney store was run by a long term staff member and OG SFC fan last I checked.

That’s the one. They sold about 5 or so years ago. My understanding, and this one may be wrong, but they bought the Putney one as it was just outside of the non-compete. You could see the difference, Putney went amazing and Boronia Park went downhill.

If you remember a shorter slightly balding man with a thick accent that’s my father in law?

I could be wrong but sounds like that might just have been local gossip.

It is two blocks from my parents place so I usually drop in when I go back home to say hello and avoid my mother’s terrible cooking.

Ciro the son in law and Maria a daughter (not Ciro’s wife) of the original owner Tony, were definitely there in 2022. So seems unlikely they would still be there if they sold 5 years ago.

We would often sell out well before the chickens were off the spit. Problem was it takes 1.5 hours to cook from when they are first put on (slower with a full load) there was also a capacity issue for storage with only a max of 2 days worth of stock being stored at a time.

To be fair that sounds like a good 50% of clientele but I would definitely have served him at some point.

I was there a lot when working through Uni.

Gotta hit up the FIL hahaha He was adamant that they’d sold as he recons he knows the owner. Perhaps they bought it back after a while? Not sure on that one. There was definitely a sudden period where the supply went down hill very rapidly. We were regular customers in 2017 onwards and never had issues. Then when the FIL told us they’d sold, you could see there was less people and they never had any chickens left. You’d literally walk in at 6:00pm and they were all gone, and there wasn’t any more chickens on the spits either.

My sister used to live on the side street of that Boronia Park shop and the smell wafting down still lives on in my memory. Outstanding.

Can any of these chicken shops fill in at LB so we don’t have to play JCP there anymore?

I reckon Frangos Bella Vista is a better Frangos than any non-Granville El Jannah is an El Jannah.
