In a WSL synopsis (Matildas trio part of WSL history on mixed day for Aussies)

The biggest contingent of Matildas stars ever to play in England’s Women’s Super League (WSL) launched their 2023-24 season with mixed results – and with the biggest name of all, Sam Kerr, left having to sit out opening day with injury.

Of the 13 Australian players now featuring in England’s top flight, it was a proved a tough day for Arsenal’s high-profile trio of Matildas – Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and new signing Kyra Cooney-Cross following a surprise 1-0 loss to Liverpool.

Despite the first-up defeat, Arsenal did make history at the Emirates Stadium, where a record-breaking 54,115 fans were in attendance.

It broke the WSL record.

Catley and Foord both played the full 90 but substitute Cooney-Cross only got a brief cameo after being introduced in the 86th minute as Arsenal, already out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, suffered a severe setback on launch day.

At Stamford Bridge, Matildas superstar Kerr turned up to cheer on her Chelsea teammates even though she was evidently not properly fit enough yet to be included in the champions’ squad to face London rivals Tottenham on Sunday (Monday AEDT) following her injury-hit FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Kerr’s fantastic semi-final goal against England just under six weeks ago had left Blues fans hopeful that she’d be flying by the time the season started yet she was still not considered ready to lead the line after her calf trouble.

The good news for Chelsea was that Kerr’s replacement, new American signing Mia Fishel scored on her debut to ensure the Blues, this season going for a fifth title in a row, made another successful start with a 2-1 victory.

Elsewhere, Matildas goalkeeper and new West Ham captain Mackenzie Arnold saved a penalty but she could not prevent the Hammers from falling to a 2-0 defeat against a Manchester City team featuring Mary Fowler and Alanna Kennedy.

Brighton and Hove Albion, for whom new Sydney FC signing Charlie Rule came on a substitute, earned a 2-1 victory at Everton, who also gave a late cameo to their own Aussie, Clare Wheeler, while Courtney Nevin featured in Leicester City’s 4-2 win at Bristol City.

Is it still ok to hate Arsenal but hope the Matilda’s in their team do well?

Given there was Leeds in the late 90s-early noughties with Kewell, Viduka, etc., I’d say the answer is yes?

Raso also got her first start at Real.

And on the coaching front. Michael Beale sacked from Rangers. Muscat is one of the favourites to take over.

Kisnorbo sounds like hes about to get sacked at Toulouse. Aussie media linking him to Yokohama

Muscat / Yokohama got knocked off at home by Vissel Kobe over the weekend. Kobe have gone 4 points (+ significant GD) in front with 5 games remaining.

He’s at Troyes, but anyway. I simply cannot believe he hasn’t been sacked yet. His win record is 2 out of 33. Something really strange must be going on at that club for it to be tolerated for so long.

CumDog + PetRat combined to stuff up a penalty for Mohun Bagan in the AFC Cup

(Cummings got the 92nd minute winner to make up for it)

oof. I’m a bit of a Kisnorbo skeptic, but that can’t be all on the coach. You’d think he’d have won a couple more, even by accident…

That’s comically bad.

Wasn’t it Eric Mombearts who recommended him for the job. Bet he’s not feeling all that happy.

Fantastic to see a CFG project stinking it up

Kyra, Foord and Catley all played together for about 15 minutes in front of a record WSL crowd of 54k.

How’s the encroachment on that pen tho

Rostyn Griffiths played a full game at CB for Mumbai City in their 3-0 loss to Navbahor Namangan in the AFC Champions League

Ange goes top, for now. A great start to life at the Lane.

Metcalfe off the bench to score the last in a 5-1 win, top of the league for st Pauli

Spurs went a man down as well. They would have dropped points in that situation in previous seasons. He has really got the players believing

Souttar got a rare start for Leicester overnight. Did well

I’m not a Spurs fan but I’ve been loving this Ange adventure. Spurs are great to watch this year, and they"re not a team i hate so there’s no conflict for me. If they end up winning something it’d be amazing.

Ange is also single handedly changing the perception of Aussie football over there, as much if not moreso than past Aussie players. I was watching an interview with Gary Lineker & he said how unusual it was for him to hear an Australian accent talking football. And Spurs fans saying Ange is the 1st Aussie they ever liked :joy:

I dont think they’ll go all the way as the squad lacks depth, but it will be fascinating to see how long Ange/Spurs can keep the current momentum going.
