I thought Baccus was the backup for the Devlin role. It was the other way around.
Glad he got it, he definitely asked for it on pitch during the post match handshakes, and Messi indicated towards the tunnel as in “sure, later”.
That’s a helluva souvenir, 1000th game and all. Well played Cammy.

Got to feel for Messi there a bit - the shirt he played his 1000th game in and Devlin is hanging about in front of the media to get that shirt… I mean, Devlin wasn’t even on the pitch lol

Well tbh I just had to google his name. Was thinking more along the lines of Robbie Staler who also got Maradonas shirt and has still got it as far as I’m aware
For a long time now the Socceroos name has been largely synonymous with a group of players who everyone knew and who no longer play the game, namely the golden generation. General/lesser football fans and the wider public didn’t know any of the current team and therefore had no affection or interest in them. In general the only stories about the Socceroos in more recent times have mostly been negative ones.
After this World Cup I feel it no longer matters who pulls on the shirt. Only that you give 110% when you do. Joe Public doesn’t need to know who they are or where they play week in week out, and now he/she doesn’t care. Their only care is that they’re Australian and it’s the Socceroos taking Australia to the world stage. They are THE team for all of Australia. No matter who is on the pitch.
I’ve also noticed more talk in the post game wash up this time around about improved government funding and improving/lowering financial access to junior football. These are two vital and pivotal points to address. If we can accomplish those two things it will have world beating changes for our game.
