Australian Professional Leagues - They can't be worse than the FFA... can they?

I am happy no one has made it a thing as I have completely forgot they do that crap.

I am the indifference.

In a sport where the point of difference is the atmosphere, how does this work?

Does anyone that goes to multi club forums know of people going to Sydney for it?

Article says they expect 42,000 people to visit Sydney for the round.

Don’t know where they get that from, but that’s a lot more than I expect…

A wild Qantas/Jetstar appears…

I’m predicting this round to be a complete, and utter failure.

Doesn’t this Unite Round thing exist as a compromise for Sydney losing the yearly Grand Final? I agree it will likely fall well short of the NRL Magic Round, but it could’ve been more expensive for the APL to have no alternative.

Keepup to cease to exist.

How much if Silver Lakes investment has now been wasted?

Also has a go at the total 48k crowd for Unite Round.

And states that TV ratings are below minimums in the Ten/ Paramount contracts.

Cheery news in the Herald as well.

“While the rest of Australian soccer is booming, with the grassroots strong and both the Socceroos and Matildas coming off record-breaking performances at their respective World Cups, the A-Leagues are going in the opposite direction, with crowds and general interest continuing to nosedive.”

At least those worried that Rugari may not have his SMH gig seem assuaged.

A-league MEN, thank you very much
ALW crowds seem to be going up

Ah yes, let us give thanks to the cash cow that is the dub.

Doesn’t change my point.

Seems they’ve pretty much got every big decision wrong since the APL came into being. Townsend got out at the right time.

It doesn’t change the point but it makes it fairly moot based on the fact that ALW exists on the back of ALM. If the latter fails, so does the former…

Plus the average crowds are 2,390

It’s a good point, and also WU and Macarthur bring down men’s average attendances from prior years. So ALW attendances have boomed (though have probably taken some support from the ALM) while the ALM average attendances seem to be pretty consistent from what I can see - hard to compare with the past 5 years because of impact of Covid.

I know attendances aren’t the full story of interest though, but does anyone actually have full visibility of streaming figures to compare?

I’m an optimist I know, but I think saying the A-Leagues are in a ‘nosedive’ is a bit of a stretch.

Also people get scared of redundancies but if there were a lot of inefficiencies (like KeepUp) then this is good news.

Having a football reporter there but gagged on discussing the league unless it’s bad news seems worse?

Discounting COVID restriction years, WUN and Bulls would drag down average attendance. What if you compare the other 10 clubs to 2012 or 2013 with the same 10 teams?

Edit Yeah, Trash made the same point. Should have read that first.

Yeah, “nosedive” is the thing I’m questioning most.
I obviously don’t know the financial situation, but barring COVID and more recent expansion teams, the crowds also to me seem quite consistent. I think there’s a difference between not growing at the rate you should and taking a “nosedive”.

The overall trajectory compared to last decade or so of the NSL still seems good, and Roos and Tillies successes will hopefully feed into the league (I think the Tillies have done)…But, I’m biased.

What constitutes grassroots success? Registrations?

Would be keen to see these too.
It does seem, anecdotally, that general visibility of the league has fallen off a cliff though. My friends and work colleagues etc seem to have no idea about the league anymore, whereas loads had a passing interest in it previously. I think the move away from Foxtel has been pretty damaging in that sense.
On the other hand, they (Fox) had pretty much given up on the league by the end, so I’m conscious that the league needed to find another home.
Paramount has been a shitshow.
