It’s fascinating reading you all dissect the apparent failing of the A League whilst missing the obvious, right there in your face, why can’t you see it ffs problem.
What’s the point of difference people? What separates this sporting competition from other sporting competitions in this country?
The problem starts with “Family Friendly”. Answers on the back of a postcard.
Grass roots investment (get them young and hook them for life).
Not wasting lots of cash on a website.
Centralised marketing because the clubs simply cannot afford their own. We currently live in an echo chamber where only those who are already interested know where to look to find information - clubs are limited to social media posts because hiring one intern who knows how to use photoshop is cheaper than having an actual marketing team.
They need to link the game to the socceroos and matildas. Get on that fucking hype train every four years and don’t get off. You want to be the next socceroo/matilda? This is where it happens. Play the game, watch the game. etc etc etc.
Seems pretty basic. The APL should really get SFCU in as consultants.
This thread prompted me to check if I had the app downloaded. Pretty much did as you described above. 15 seconds later I’ve closed it and gone back to google.
I don’t think the name was the problem, it’s just been the shite implementation and delivery of the content. Which is a shame, as the content was quite good.
That, and we’ve been on a spiral since the premier league rights changed. That was the easy opening for semi-casual fans. It’s no coincidence that the NBL is gaining momentum on the back of being in ESPN with the NBA.
Jam TV were producing All access are also the production arm of the NBl. No tv company is going to throw money at us in the next rights cycle, using the NBL model of footing the production bill and getting the aleague on Optus feels like the only play left.
Spot on,i was at kogarah last Saturday to watch greek herald cup olympic vs south Melbourne. After the game went up to royal hotel carlton for a feed & drinks & watch Sydney play & guess what they had the old analogue fox & no paramount or 10 play.
We used to have marketing that just did it by it’s self.
Hell, the best marketing the league has is comprised of people you don’t have to pay! Fuck me, they’ll even use their own money to create this one trick the AFL hates!
So what we want is casual available telly broadcasts for casual observers? (And TBH, I’ve sat in pubs watching games on phones/iPads. Will-way-etc.)
How do we get into that position? What’s the thing that makes that possible? A large amount of interest? What makes us interesting? What sets us apart from just another sporting comp in Australia? What did we have that drove that interest before the FFA blew it up with sheer stupidity and thinking that what works for the NRL and AFL will work for the A-League? What are the muppets in charge now trying to replicate that doesn’t work for us?
Tough time to sell active support / passionate atmosphere as the point of difference on the back of the WWC. The boffins will be more focussed on family friendly being the way forward than ever before.
Are you actually kidding? Fox tried to end the A-League contract early, during Covid, because games were cancelled. They claimed that the APL had breached their side of the contract but not playing games despite the fact that it was mandated by the government. They then used that to renegotiate the contract to significantly drop how much they were paying for the rest of the period. After that, they refused to even acknowledge that they were hosting the A-League by blatantly advertising Fox as the “home of sports” with graphics that showed all the sporting codes EXCEPT for soccer. You’re seriously kidding yourself if you think that the APL were the arseholes in this situation.
Wouldn’t you give Fox “the finger” as well, after Fox did everything they could to get out of a deal, then re-negotiate a far weaker one? If Fox really wanted to keep the A-League, they would’ve paid up.
Our old girl had a stable roster of gentlemen she was going between, and the second we were unemployed she went exclusive with the guy she’d been with longest even though he was an unemployed deadshit in stubbies. We’d be better off taking Jamberoo’s prettiest Illawarra Shorthorn.
(Ie the two above posts about Fox pulling the same trick Paramount is now doing, renegotiating to pay us less the second they could, then trying to kill us altogether when covid started).
Not the best sauce but in the latest unhinged Robbie Slater rant he states:
"I don’t know if this is true but I’ve heard Ten has a get out clause after this season. I’m hearing FA boss James Johnson is close to re-signing the Socceroos and Matildas to Channel 10.
“That would be a big mistake. I’m hearing they’re offering more money, that’s short-sighted. If they sign with Channel 10 that would be a disgrace in my opinion.”
Would be quite the achievement if unbundling led to the leagues being arsed over poor metrics while FFA land an increase for NT games.
