Australian Women’s National Team Thread - Our best chance at a World Cup

I would never claim that this team are near the top of the world. But I’m very confident that a capable coach could get more out of the group we have with way better tactical play and formation than we use currently, plus make the (apparently) hard squad calls that should be made (dropping EVE, stop having an aging slowing Polks as the defensive backup)

Didn’t they appoint Jens Fjellatom as his assistant just for this reason?

So they should still have some memory of being part time. Natio service is a part time gig.

And anyways, it’s not going to matter when you survey the coach that built the team out and then replace him with numpties.

Note to Tony. For that part of the game that you played a CB as a forward we were losing 5-3 but when you moved the CB back to her proper position and played a proper forward as a forward we won 3-0.

I wonder if the team realises how badly they’re playing? They can’t be that clueless.

That was absolute dogshit. Hilarious & entertaining dogshit, but dogshit nonetheless.

I’ve honestly seen All Ages teams play better than that. USA must be licking their lips in anticipation. They could run up a basketball score.

Side note… where did Zambia dig up that goalkeeper from. Good lord :joy:

Apparently the crowd for that game was generously 110 people. Crazily low, even if in Nice.
Meanwhile the Women’s Rugby 7s plays in front of a packed stadium in Paris.

So, do Columbia need to win this or…

So that’s that then. Basically placed 9th out of 12. A hard group, for sure, but that’s an underwhelming campaign.

Would have got through is we weren’t such a fucking shambles against Zambia. Win that by 2 and it’s Brazil going home.

When’s the coach’s contract up?

Successful teams don’t let players behave however the fuck they want.

Plan to protect the brand there I’d say. Gustavvson is on his way out anyway so background against him and protect the Matildas brand. I mean I didnt think the guy was good but clearly they did.

But then the flipside is they’ll anonymously survey you out of a job if you don’t.

Tony can’t be gone soon enough. Obviously understood playing for a point this morning, being compact and parking it in order to achieve etc But at 1-0 down, right before the second US goal, there was a drinks break with 20 minutes to go. He didn’t change it, kept a 5-2-3 with Wheeler at LWB after Torpey went off, EvE and Fowler trying to hold the middle. The cattle was right there to go 4-3-3 with Wheeler at 6 and cutting Carpenter and Catley loose. Instead we go 2-0 down and the solution was to chuck Kennedy up top… I’m almost relieved she didn’t nod that second one home and reward such utter incompetence.

Anyways, it’s been a ride and definitely guilty of caring too much at times. I suspect whoever’s in the hot seat next is going to be pushing shit uphill as the golden generation are quickly getting over it. Suspect we’ll drop down the rankings and expectations will be tempered to a more realistic level. Still looking forward to the Royal Commission into how we’ve set them up to fail consistently for a decade.

The brand means more than results. No wonder they’ll never reach their full potential. It’s an egg before chicken principle.

The brand came from results though (plus Sam Kerr)? No one gave a crap about the Matildas until they started playing and winning. Them not playing well now, will just start them straight back into obscurity.

I’d rather my teams be successful from results than have some sort of marketing cachet for doing fuck all.

this is the real concern. When do they play in Australia next? Will the momentum and passion be diminished?

f*ck yes they’ll be diminished. It’s fairly obvious Australians will support a winning team. I don’t think they’ll drop down to what they used to be, but can’t see that much interest in them anymore

Disagree.
