Australian Women’s National Team Thread - Our best chance at a World Cup

Do you reckon, or do you have figures to back that up?

Olympic tokenism allows other sports some of the spotlight and I’d like to know what a football ticket would cost compared to horses walking funny.

I honestly don’t see the Matilda’s popularity suffering too much after this performance. Even on the news they are referred to “Australia’s favourite team”. So many parents with young daughters especially are all over them now

Equestrian tickets (for dressage aka the horses walking funny), ticket categories A, B, C, D priced as follows:

Qualifiers: €150, €100, €50, €24
Medals: €330, €235, €145, €85

Football tickets, ticket categories First class, A, B, C, D priced as follows:

Group Stage: €70-100 (France games 100) €50, €40, €30, €24
Quarter Finals: €100, €80, €65, €50, €30
Semis and Final: €200, €160, €120, €80, €50

Football is plenty cheaper than the Equestrian for anyone who wanted to attend.

Why is it so much more expensive for the ministry of silly walks?

Do you have any stats to backup what you’re proposing? I haven’t seen you quote any figures yet either?

Additionally, I don’t think we need to go down that route, it’s possible to have a civilised discussion without reducing ourselves to the nonsense of “pRoVe iT wItH nUmBeRs!!!1111~~~”

But since you asked:

Wiki only has a single attendance figure for one game - Canada vs NZ, 2600~ (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_at_the_2024_Summer_Olympics_–_Women%2527s_tournament)

Meanwhile - Paris 2024 Olympics equestrian: All results, first gold for Team GB in equestrian team eventing

The equestrian world showed up in force to Versailles, said to be a record attendance for eventing.

Granted that is a final from what I can tell. Either way, it’s clear when looking at the tv coverage, crowds are down for women’s football. Is this to be expected with it not being played in Paris? Probably. Men’s games seem pretty well attended though.

Well, if you’re interested in horses you probably own one. Which means you’re a hoity toity asshole (massive generalisation, but I don’t care).

You mean the target demographic for the sports is somewhat different in a broad sense, which is reflected in the ticket prices, likely alongside the relative maximum crowd sizes at the respective events (I’mjust assuming the horsey stadiums are smaller based off zero info)?

(I like yours better)

Because they dont want the poors to go there.

But don’t they want the poors to groom the horsie and muck the stables?

That, but not watching.

Has anyone considered the difference between sports when france is competing? Was France in the equestrian? Would make sense to have more people than a Womens football game

What is so elitist about owning a horse?

Ask Princess Anne.

We are talking about dressage aren’t we?

It’s not exactly jumpers for goals here.

So because some of the elite own horses all horse owners are tarred with the same brush?

Are all motor races elitists as well? That’s certainly not a cheap endeavour either.
I know many people with horses who compete in equestrian events. They’re certainly not rubbing shoulders with royalty.

I know someone who paid $30k for a horse. They intend to use the horse for breeding after its eventing days are over. It is quite well bred apparently so they will be able to recoup some of that initial outlay with its progeny.

How is that anymore elite than someone who goes out and pays $40k for a Harley so they can go for a ride on the weekend?

I don’t think you have to be royalty, but let me tell you it is not just a cliche that the cheapest part of buying a horse, is buying the horse

Well, yes.

Relax dude.

I’m not posh and I have heaps of horses.

But top level equestrian, especially in Europe, is super duper upper class. Actual princes and princesses stuff. I have no qualms about poking a bit of fun at those types.

Who figures an immigrant is going to have a pony
