Australian Women’s National Team Thread - Our best chance at a World Cup

That’s crazy… when’s the last time you were consulted when they recruited your boss? Ok, so in practical terms they might just give the senior players a heads up before the appointment… but ‘consulted’? So does that mean that if Kerr hates someone because they called out her drunken behaviour then they are scratched? Crazy

Really is just mental and very much sends the worst possible message to the new coach. He’s there on their behest and needs to make sure he follows their rules. Whoever came up with that idea is just daft

Unless they’re there to explain why Tony was such a shit coach, so they don’t make the same mistake again?

That debrief is probably the one good use of an anonymous survey… but second-guessing what the next coach will be like is crazy, based on their likely non-experience (unless they’ve been their coach, but even then, it is not in the same team setting, so different).

Edit: just reading the article again, Johnson seems to be justifying Gustavsson’s “success” as evidence that consultation is good! ie, he’s the result of consultation, so there you go…

The fact that they’re talking about “managing Kerr as a 30 y.o. player” shows how absolutely stupid this is. If Kerr’s legs fell off tomorrow they wouldn’t know what to do. They’d still be wondering how we might be able to get her on the pitch. Never mind the others who are well past their best and might have bowed out of international football after the Olympics. Nup, let’s ask them what they want going forward.

In the Matlidas defence though, they very much do still need Kerr to play well. If not only just for the marketing value. She’s world famous, she’s likeable (when she doesn’t drink) and she’s a decent footballer. She’s only 30, still got maybe another 5 years left in her, as long as her injury is managed properly

If Football Australia don’t know how to find the right coach by now, they should make way for someone who can make such a decision. It’s such a strange way to go about it.

No chance would any of their clubs would ask such a thing of their players unless there was serious misconduct from the previous coach. I don’t see any evidence of that from Tony G, apart from odd tactics and team picks at times.

Kerr has played what, less than 30% of the available competitive minutes in the last few years?

Its opening the door to all sorts of issues. You know what, if I was a 31 year old midfielder clearly playing out of my depth but not wanting to walk away from national team duties, what I’d most want in a coach is someone who has the initials GVE.

If I remember the whole Staj thing correctly, there were the alleged complaints from several of the senior players and there was interference from someone outside but close to the playing group, and they were trying to bring in their own candidate as coach.

There was talk at the time from some quarters that the next coach after Staj must be a female coach. Gatty hinted such a scheme was in effect, and he’s no mug. It was discussed at the very top of this thread, actually.

As I remember, it was a female board member that was pushing for this. The same individual subsequently resigned

That was Heather Reid. Joey Peters also openly applauded Staj’s stacking and backed the FFA at the time.

TBH they were absolutely right to sack the kind of bloke who’d accept a WSW gig. The system works!

Yeah, this is where a Minority Report type system would come in handy…

Ranked 15 now. It’s all going swell.

Not really surprising. Big European football nations are finally getting their shit together for the women’s game. Give it another three years and it wouldn’t surprise me if we’re (slightly) below 20th.

The difference there (in comparison to the mens game) is that I think football has a an opportunity to attract the top tier of women athletes in country at the moment. Other than Tennis & Golf football has edged forward in terms of pay (I’m pretty sure) - at least globally.

The same issue exists with our domestic competition though. The standard of A-League Women is still terrible and AFLW and NRLW are starting to make inroads. Fox is screening every NRLW game this season.

If you’re a parent of an ten-year-old now and your daughter is showing promise as an athlete, I don’t know if the ceiling of her salary is really a consideration?

If our child is equally talented at football and an other sport, which one is cheaper?

I don’t know about other sports but I’d surprised if we win (as in, have lower fees). Football fees are out of control.
