Australian Women’s National Team Thread - Our best chance at a World Cup

Looking so much better once EvE went off…

Really liking Freier playing up a bit.

Those crosses from Yallop have been top shelf too. She’d been a bit wasted earlier in the game, everyone seemed to run away from her once she got the ball, but once moved a little more centrally, got more involved.

Another pretty full stadium too - did they manage to sell this one out?

26700 odd, so not quite. Was a good atmosphere though… it’s so awesome seeing so many girls/women at these games

This is the second match in a week against a team we should slaughter, and Gielnik, Polkinghorne, Yallop, Heyman and EvE are all taking minutes away from players who don’t have one foot in the grave. Why?

Gielnik is garbage.

Yallop was one of few shining lights in the first game against Taiwan, and I have no problems with Polks starting in her last game for the Matildas.

Otherwise, we SHOULD be getting minutes for as many younger players as possible.

I do like that Freier seems to be starting further up the park than she did on Wednesday.

Never fails.

Doesn’t mean you were wrong though.

VicPol kicking a couple out for having a Taiwanese flag.

Interesting. Commentary has referred to them as Taiwan a couple of times.

I mean, fuck China.

Same reason why the team doesn’t have a full time coach. The players have all of the power.

The funniest bit about it is Tom Sermanni said in the build up to these games that we hadn’t done enough to prepare for the future

Taiwan = China
“China” = West Taiwan
Hong Kong = Hong Kong

What a great run from Freier for the 6th goal, I have absolutely loved her play these two games and I hope to see her get more time even when we’re full strength. Definitely a highlight of this series.

So, is there any news on a permanent Matildas coach appointment, or will our international search land us with Sermanni?

The Guardian has released their Top 100 Women’s Footballers for 2024.
In what I feel is an accurate portrayal of where our Women’s side sits in the right now, only 3 Australian’s made the list this year, Caitlin Foord, Ellie Carpenter and Mary Fowler. Caitlin Foord is the highest at #65.

Obviously Sam Kerr would be on there if fit but it is hard to argue for anyone else’s inclusion.

I would have thought Fowler would be higher than Foord.

Fowler was often a bench player at City whilst Foord was a regular starter and scorer at Arsenal.

I guess it was important to give the John Farnham Last Tour treatment for Clare Polkinghorne. I guess the FA weren’t satisfied with giving one of our best ever Matildas a last appearance in her home state.

Surely KCC is close, doing pretty well at arsenal.

Interesting comment by James Johnson in regards to the search for the full time coach in this article.

Johnson was equally reserved when asked if FA had a target.

“We had a long list. We had a shortlist. We have a very short, short, short, shortlist,” he said.

"The reality is, we know who we want. We know the type of coach we want.

“We’ve just got to go out and get that coach when that coach is available.”

So they know who they want but that person is currently employed somewhere else?
