Completed it, Mate - The Football Manager 2019 Thread

After 11 games of the 2023/24 season, Sambenedettese are top of Serie A! Only by head-to-head after beating Napoli 2-0, but it is a huge achievement. I don’t expect to stay there. I still have to play a number of top teams right in the middle of trying to qualify for the knockout stages in Europe.

We started the group stage disastrously with a 4-0 loss at Bayern, but have gone on to get a 3-3 draw against Real Madrid at home (after leading twice) and a 2-0 win against Monaco at home. Bayern are having a shocker of a campaign so far, so if we can knock them off at home in the next game, we’ll at least secure a Europa League spot. That would be a good achievement given the group we were given.

Vido isn’t scoring much this season but has racked up more assists. The goals have been pretty well shared across the team so far. I had to sell my young star CB Walukiewicz because he pushed for a move, but I got in Emanuel Mammana who has done pretty well so far and is quicker than my other CB, Magnani, who wins most of the headers.

Little update on the Sambenedettese save. I got to the end of 2023 top of the table. Juventus are our closest chasers, two points behind but have played two games more. Inter are the closest threat, though, as they’ve played the same amount of games as us but are four points behind. Napoli are not far behind them.

We failed to qualify from the Champions League group, as expected, but a tense 3-2 win at home to Bayern Munich guaranteed us a Europa League spot. We play Shakhtar Donetsk, which is quite winnable for us, but will have to do it around some tough Serie A fixtures.

EDIT: One thing I just noticed. I checked the squad dynamics and noted this

I have never seen only a single core group for my senior squad in any of my saves before. Has anyone else managed this? Is it easy to do?

FM25 is officially brown bread

I’m not surprised, I’m glad they did this instead of pump out a shit half game.

I agree that its a good idea for them to give themselves more time to get it right for the next game. FM26 was going to be heavily compromised otherwise.

Right decision for me. It was always going to be a big task with such a change, moving to new engine.

Just as well I claimed FM24 for free from epic…

I cracked my FM20 Kaiserslautern save back open a few nights back. I’d put it away for a few months as whilst I had built a great young side (averaging maybe 23 in age) that won the Bundesliga 3 of the last 5 seasons, I was constantly getting knocked out in the first knockout stage of the champions league. Most of the other teams are outspending me on wages by 4 or 5 times. Save is maybe 11 seasons old.

Couldn’t be arsed to push through 3 or 4 seasons to get my team to their peak just get knocked out anyway.

Decided to give it one more go, save was about half way through the season approaching end of group stage, come second having had my team handed it’s arse to it by a dominant Chelsea side twice, albeit the last game we had both already qualified and they would be first and FCK would finish 2nd regardless.

Gave my B team a run (an entirely different 11), including a 34 year old who had come up with me from 3. Liga to the Bundesliga, become a legend of the club but went elsewhere for game time in his peak. The rest of the team are still decent to good players , probably capable of a comfortable top half finish in the league.

Brought him back for sentimentality reasons last season, even though he wouldn’t make a Bundesliga 2 side, figured I could afford the EUR4k pw salary.

Get drawn first leg at home agaisnt Barcelona. Somehow the kids are outrageously clinical on the counter and we win first leg 3 0 despite 38% possession, and we hang on to 1 all away.

Real Madrid next… and again get the home leg first. We actually do well in the first leg but poor finishing means we only finish 1 nil. Get smashed in first half of the 2nd leg and very lucky to go in having only conceded 1. Mentally prepare to put the save out to pasture.

Lose my shit in the dressing room, has no impact but on 65 minutes, a real player loses their head, 2 foots one of mine, red card and from there it’s all over for them, we score 3 and I start wondering what if…

Meanwhile, in the league my lead has reduced from 7 points to 2 as said B team is playing the majority of the games so that I have a fresh side for the ECL (and domestic cup) challenge. Have dropped the 34 year old from the B team cos he sucks.

Tottenham next - home leg first again… more clinical finishing sees 3 nil in the first leg and 3 1 away as we pick them off on the counter. Stats suggested a 3 2 aggregate loss or so would have been more representative, but my keeper and striker had great games, theirs didn’t.

Other side of the draw sees top of the EPL Man Utd vs 8th place in Bundesliga (Hoffenheim I think). Hope for the upset, but no, 5 nil to utd.

League lead has built back to 7 with 2nd place having 3 to play, me only 2. My next game is 1st vs 2nd, start stressing about whether to play the 2nd team in that game to prioritise champions league or not.

Watch their game in hand which they some lose to a mid table lot! Problem solved.

Domestic cup run continues and we make the final of that too. Fairly straightforward win there too, my team being much fresher due to heavy use of the B team in the league over the final months.

Turns out the champions league final is to be played at Old Trafford. Against Man Utd, I figure that the game is conspiring against me. Decide that if I lose, I’m going to pack up FM again for the next forever, because it’s the hope that kills you.

Game day comes. We are completely dominant due to the freshness of our players, but we only score one in the first half and they equalise on half time. Start second half in the same way, my world class striker and (not world class) left wing having terrible games missing sitters and easy passes. Get hit on the counter on 60 minutes and again Mentally prepare to put the save away forever.

Bring on an out of position AM to play left wing and bring on my 2nd best striker. Think about a triple change but keep one sub up my sleeve just in case.

3 min later, my subs combine. 2 after that, it happens again. Penalty in the 85th seals it (and the hattrick for my sub striker), and as I had the one sub remaining, bring on my 34 year old legend for injury time.

Having now won the treble, have packed the save up anyway!

TL;DR

Picked up my old save which I stopped playing because I thought it would be too much effort to play another 5 seasons to still miss out on winning the champions league, win it immediately, bringing on an aging club legend in the 89th minute (who was retiring next day) so he could lift the trophy.

In real life, said legend Theodor Bergmann left FCK after like 2 seasons and retired at the age of 27 or so. Someone somewhere suggests he didn’t have his contact extended as he refused to get jabbed, no idea how true that is.

I prefer FM20 Theodor.

My Sambenedettese save is entering the final quarter of the 2023/24 season. We are still ahead on the table but its getting really tight now.

We still have to play the rest of the top four, including a trip to Atalanta only two days after a trip to Nazio. We’ll have eight games in the last month of the season. That’s going to be really tough for my relatively small squad. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get swamped in that period and finish third or fourth, but it would be a shame after having such an incredible league season.

In the Europa League, we knocked out Shakhtar on the away goals rule (thanks FM19!) after a 2-2 draw at home and a late equaliser to draw 3-3 away. We met Wolfsburg in the last 16, collapsing in the last 10 minutes of the away leg to lose 4-1, followed by one of the craziest games I can remember.

I decided we would push very high and stop them playing out like they did in the first leg. They scored first, so figured it was pretty much tie over. Our high line pushed them into an error and Fossum passed it into an empty net. Then we earned a penalty and scored from it to make it 2-1. He also smacked home a shot from distance to make it 3-1 with about 20 minutes to go. Then my senior CB, Magnani, decided it was a good time to dive with two feet from behind and get sent off, after we’d gone 4-4-2 to push for another goal. So I left Mammana out as the sole CB and kept pushing. Sure enough, we pushed the Wolfsburg keeper into another error playing out, and Fossum again passed to an empty net to make it 4-1 on the night. With 10 men, I decided I wasn’t going to extra time and kept going. We even looked like scoring again until they launched a long ball at the start of injury time, and with no other defender in sight, Mammana hacked the striker the fuck down and got sent off. Despite me subbing on a CB to try and hold on, they scored two goals in injury time to knock us out.

Arse

I wasn’t too upset getting knocked out. I actually laughed my arse off when Mammana got sent off. Good luck to me on my first European game next season!

One little bit I forgot. Finally I have a quality youth player come through the youth system! It only took six seasons and upgrading pretty much every season to get it to “average” at least with some good junior coaching. Uche is part Italian so he doesn’t count towards my non-EU contingent.

Just read that fm24 is free with Xbox game pass.

I yell out to one of my kids, oi do you have Xbox game pass?
Yeah I do.
Fuck yeah, installed on my computer

Sambenedettese are 2023/24 Serie A champions! We stumbled a fair bit through the second half of the season after going 14-2-3 in the first half of the season, but we edged out title rivals Juventus 1-0 on the final day to hold onto top spot with 78 points, the lowest winning points total for Serie A in this save game. I think getting knocked out of the Europa League early-ish helped a bit with fixture congestion. There were also a crazy bunch of results that meant that runner-up Juventus only finished with 73 points. So there was a bit of luck involved but we set it up in the first half of the season.

Top scorers for me were Bentivegna on 11 (also with 15 assists), Angulo on 10, then Vido, Valzania and Kiki Silva on 9 each. It really was a season for sharing the goals around.

The day after the league triumph, the club approved the building of a 21,500 stadium called the Ottavio Palladini Arena at a cost of just over £30m. We get half of that back through stadium sponsorship over time.

To compete seriously in the Champions League, though, we’ll need quite a few new signings. GK, LB and CF are all positions that could do with improving but its going to start getting expensive now to upgrade any of them.

I just did the Euros with Italy. Three games, one goal scored and seven goals shipped later, I’m out of the NT job. I feel a bit like this at the moment.

In my first FM save in donkeys years.

I’ve taken over as the manager of Tamworth, as someone who grew up in Tamworth NSW I always had a connection to our Staffordshire friends.

I’m top of the national league north in February of my first season.
Looking solid. Playing a 352 in a similar manner that I use in real life.

Haven’t had to sign many players, couple of loans and my head of youth development has found a coupla gun youngsters.
Making money each month so I should be able to build something over the next few years to get into league football.

Seeing I’ve won Serie A with Sambenedettese, I’m going to re-install FM23 and start a youth challenge. I’m going to give Brazil a shot.

Think I’ll start another save somewhere really low. There’s loads of downloads available for leagues as low as 10th tier. Might give one of those a try

I’ve started my FM23 youth challenge with STA, otherwise known as Santa Cruz, in the Brazilian Third Division. As per the youth challenge rules, they were one of the clubs promoted from the Fourth Division in the first season. They’re expecting me to avoid the drop, so expectations are pretty low.

You got to love Brazilian common names. My main striker is called Michel Douglas!

My Dad gave me an old laptop, so I’ve re-downloaded FM18, the last FM I’ve bought. Fuck I missed this game.

Started up a new save. I do love within the first few weeks of any new save in FM the game changes the 2022 WC location from Qatar to Australia.

A bit rusty, but in my first season took the U23 Aussies to 3rd place in the U23 Asian Cup. Lost to South Korea in the semis 3-2 after being 2-1 up in the 70th minute. We kinda shit the bed.

I always started with no experience and no coaching badges just to make it more challenging.

First job was with Sarawak in the Malaysian Super League. Was a relegation scrap and I resigned after 21 days because the team was absoloute gash and no hope of surviving relegation and I didn’t want to have my first gig wind up in a relegation and get fired.

Decided to take Indonesian League 1 club Barito Putra over with 2 games left in the season. They too were fighting relegation, but after losing the opening game I won the fial game of the season 1-0 in a jammy game where I had about 5 shots on goal, the only being on target the goal, and had the opposition send a gazillion shots wide.

Now looking to build the team for the upcoming season. Hoping to finish upper mid table. Only get 3 foreign spots (2 non AFC) so having to do some serious scouting for the perfect player.

The club have no interest in me upgrading youth facilities or youth quality but I do have a 500k transfer budget, but only a 20k wage budget. Should be interesting.

I won the national league north with Tamworth on goal difference.

Doing solid in the first two months of the National League, sitting in 12th spot and looking comfortable.
I have drawn a lot of games that I’ve gone ahead in, just gotta stop that and I’ll be pushing the promotion places.

I’ve done a really good job of recruiting youth players, my Under 18s won their league by about 15 points and are looking good this year.
Hopefully a handful of them can turn into decent league players.

So Arnold is sacked in May 2019 in my save despite winning the Australia Cup, they finished 8th.

Sticking with the classic Bling FC moniker, we’ve signed the blingiest bling to have blinged the A-Liga.
