Quality Squires… but I still hate any suggestion Ange was harshly treated / under-appreciated. We were absolutely dire from 2015 onwards (the system wasn’t the problem, it was shoe-horning half the team into it) and just 6 inches away from being beaten over 2 legs by Syria. Syria!
And after all that it was still his decision to walk.
Wish him well in the J-League, but frankly still pissed about his subsequent attempts to portray himself as an outcast / martyr. That Australian Story episode was pure revisionist garbage.

Ange is our best coach but he’s stubborn to a fault and does not handle criticism well. When he doesn’t have the cover of results he reacts badly, makes bad decisions, and his demeanor does not inspire confidence in players or fans.
It cost him a good three or four years of his career after the Fozzie interview, and it almost cost us qualification to WC18.

Frankly, IMO this has largely happened because he was followed by Arnie. People hate Arnie simply because he coached us and due to a brief unsuccessful period in charge of the NT at an early point in his career.
It’s also entirely possible that football fans are not entirely rational and dispassionate.

I was a pretty lousy AA8 player coach but even I know Robbie Kruse is no wingback.
Reality in my view is it is much easier to play a dominant, possession and technique based style of football with a to of the table, high quality technically capable Japanese team that is better than most of the opposition it faces man to man than it is to play the same style with a team that is much less technically gifted than 75% of its opposition. Being too stubborn to fix that is not incongruent with doing exceptionally well with playing the same style with a team that is better than most.
