Just a few months ago we were wondering whether there was some cap restriction, because Talay was pulling some of the stupidest shit I’ve ever seen in three decades of watching football, with a Sega-Cáceres double pivot and Kamijo nowhere to be seen.
So either Talay is so stupid he decided we needed a transition season when we had one of the most stacked squads in the club’s history and then proceeded to do the worst transition job in the history of football (he preferred Joel fucking King out of position over ZDJ for most of the season).
Or he has so little respect for the fans that he’s willing to straight up lie to us to cover his own incompetence. I’m not sure which is worse.
This is honestly one of the lowest moments I can remember in 20 years supporting the club.
Super strongly disagree with “our squad is good enough to win the league”. We knew at the start of the season this squad was massively unbalanced- sure our attacking could win the league but we absolutely lack in most positions in defence. We knew Redders was declining, we lacked a CB, and weren’t sure if Sena was going to be a good Brattan repalcement.
We still need a keeper, a CB and a DM and probably at least one fullback.
One look at our squad list disproves transition season. Almost everyone (except our 2 best yoof) locked in for next year. He recruited 4/5 of the foreign slots, the one he didn’t was the best player in the comp until flogged to death and now regularly played out of position.
This squad was built to win now, ofc made super lopsided by signing Dougie instead of a CB. He also can’t claim the sale of Matthews really hindered there, it was on the cards and the extra 6 months we got out of him we were still a rabble at the back with that high line.
I dunno I feel like at the start of the season it really looked like the team was only a few steps away from being cohesive but then injuries to key players and our very poor defence just dropped morale. We just fell apart and started to rely on individual class
Agree to disagree then. The squad had some balance issues as they all do.
We could have done with an older head in the back line. I think that was one of those ones that didn’t work out. But once we signed Popavic I think we were all rightly pretty confident.
But either way we spent a shitload on this squad in the last offseason. It definitely wasn’t a play the kids and see season.
Agree to disagree on if the squad was good enough to win the league.
Agree to agree that this squad was recruited for a big season this season (but recruited poorly, with tactics that dont match the team, and now we’ve gone even weirder by Lolley at LWB). The “transition” season is just a bit of plastering over how poor the seasons been.
This. defence has been woeful, but I can kinda forgive it due to the disrupted backline. But the teams attacking play too often appears directionless, almost like they don’t work on transitions when countering or on attacking drills that would suit playing against your average a-league team. My only thought for why we’ve kept talay is that maybe it comes down to money (he’s not asking too much compared to someone like Arnie ?)
