Ok so I’m genuinely trying to learn here.
What does the sleeping mat tell us? Is it the fact that it appears to be made of foam, which puts it sometime after whenever foam things were commonplace?
What about the bucket hat? I suppose I could Google “when did the bucket hat first appear” and go from there.
For the footwear, if that chick is wearing what I think looks like Chuck Taylor’s, that probably gives some clue, but is there more I should be deducing from the other boots?
Any help would be appreciated.
So, I can remember my family getting sleeping mats. Fucked if I can remember when. So I made an assumption and was out by a substantial amount. We didn’t get them till about the mid 80s. I assumed they would have been around for a while. The scarf around the neck of the guy in the check shirt and jeans threw me off.
The guy on the left with the framed pack … by the year this was taken they really should have been binned. Framed backs had been left behind by then.
The quality of the photo it’s self. It’s grainy in a 70s kinda way.

That hikers photo was a bit affected by what seems to be a Eastern European/Balkan setting. Romania maybe? That all complicates things. The wee kid has spectacularly high pants. I’d be surprised if he ever became a father.

My mum was a 10 pound pom too. They’re originally from Wales, arrived in 1970. From memory they were given a choice between Sydney or Melbourne.
Thankfully they made the right choice.
