Everything is on fire - the US politics thread

The problem is that a fair percentage of the media WON’T pick this up and the consumers of this media will continue to live in a reality bubble.

There is also the overestimation of how many Americans actually follow any type of news, particularly related to politics and the election. I have seen many interviews recently with undecided voters who admit to not following it closely, with a the common theme of ‘Ill do my own research just before the election’.

Trump really is sinking down to new lows. He’s made the following claims, al that were proven to be completely bs:

  • the Governor of North Carolina wasn’t able to contact Biden.
  • they’re only giving out $750 for support
  • they’re stopping aid from going to Republican voting areas
  • they’re giving money only to migrants
  • they’re confiscating donations and preventing aid workers from going to affected areas

Even for him, they’re new absolute lows… The $750 payout is potentially the most damaging as it’s just a payout to get people through the first period, they can still apply for more relief down the track.

What a tool. If he gets voted in, those idiots deserve all they get. Just hope it doesn’t affect Australia too much

I’m slightly concerned about the affect him winning whould have on the markets but at the same time realise they would probably improve. Which in itself is damning.

The affects would more than likely be huge on a global scale. You’d more than likely see Israel with nothing holding them back, wiping Palestine from the face of the earth. Putin will take over Ukraine and either annex all of it, or replace it with a puppet state. The war in Syria would more than likely have all US troops withdrawn. Either way, we’re talking about the potential deaths of millions of innocent people.

On the environmental front, i’m sure he’s going to go at least partial Project 2025. He’ll want to ensure that it’s almost impossible to roll back any changes as he lifts mining, oil and gas restrictions. Things that will have global impacts down the line.

Economy wise, you’d expect all of the above to hit the world fairly hard. Yes it’ll eventually stabilize, but it’ll take decades to go back to what it was. Not to mention the spectre of further wars down the track.

And crazy tariffs, with all the flow-on impacts.

Even if Trump wins, pulls out of NATO and no longer spends a dime on foreign weapons sales, I think short of a complete and utter Ukranian collapse, Putin can’t win this war.

The EU and NATO will still fund the Ukranian war effort, perhaps just not to the extent that America can.

Trump will also learn very quickly that the US weapons companies that are building and replenishing the stockpiles of surplus weaponary that the US is donating, won’t be too happy when their #1 source of income - The US Government is pulling the plug on what is one of their largest income streams right now.

There’s not too many left anyway, all they’re doing is protecting Rojava oil fields in the Northeast of the country. That, and stopping Turkey from launching a full blown invasion of the region - which might occur.

Russia can’t dedicate any more resources to Syria than they already have. Wagner was doing the bulk of the heavy lifting over there for a while, and the Russians have been forced to cut a lot of their air force and ground troop assets due to how badly Ukraine is going for them. It’s why Bashar Al-Assad has stopped launching offensives against rebel held territory, because they’re dependent on Russian air assets.

The thing to watch in Syria is the resurgence of ISIS. They’re not as powerful as they were, but there’s a worry uptick in ISIS activity in the Syrian deserts.

To be honest most of those have been American right talking points through disasters for decades.

Tend to agree that Trump fully supporting Putin in 2024 and beyond isn’t quite as likely as four years ago… plus a lot of pressure coming from European allies… who also buy lots of US weaponry.

I don’t think Trump has echoed it (yet) but there’s a not insignificant number of people (and social media viral posts) claiming that the government is controlling the hurricanes and sending them through areas with lithium mines so blackrock can capitalise on investments.

We’re through the looking glass here, people.

A guy at a shop down here tried to tell me that yesterday.

President Joe Biden has accused Donald Trump for leading an “onslaught of lies” that authorities warn is hampering hurricane recovery efforts and putting lives at risk.

As Hurricane Milton barrelled toward Florida’s west coast on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT), the president used a briefing from federal officials to rebuke the misinformation being peddled regarding Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, declaring: “This has to stop.”

“Former president Trump has led the onslaught of lies,” he said.
“Assertions have been made that property is being confiscated – that’s simply not true.

“They’re saying people impacted by these storms, received $750 in cash and no more. That’s simply not true.

“They’re saying the money is needed for this crisis is being diverted to migrants. What a ridiculous thing to say; it’s not true.

“Now the claims are getting even more bizarre. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a congresswoman in Georgia, is now saying the federal government is literally controlling the weather.

“We’re controlling the weather? It’s beyond ridiculous. It’s got to stop.”

Taylor Greene, who is one of Trump’s most loyal supporters in the US Congress, also shared a conspiracy theory with her 1.2 million followers on X suggesting that the government was somehow responsible for the hurricane.

“Yes they can control the weather. It’s ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can’t be done,” she wrote, in a post that has received widespread condemnation.

It’s amazing when someone who literally denies the fact that humans can affect the weather, then claims that humans can control the weather…

They’re eating the dogs…
They’re eating the cats…
They’re controlling the weather…
They’re rigging the election…

It’s getting boring.

Apparently Trump is refusing to release his medical records. I reckon it’s cause he knows he’s got dementia.

someone went out into that to hang a Trump flag… fucking hell…

Was watching a youtube livestream that was following updates and had some storm chasers live video feeds. by the time the stream ended (about 2hrs after first making landfall) one part of the west coast south of Tampa was already over 2m underwater with the water still rising.

The big worry if Trump wins apart from all those already espoused on this thread, is that others in opposition in “democracies” will see that playing from Hitler’s 1930’s songbook is an easy way to win power.
The generation who saw that is gone.

I would also say, we can already see the internet is a colossal dumpster fire of misinformation, abuse, bigotry etc. If trump wins its validation for the approach of musk and other such players to keep pouring the petrol on. That certainly has global impact. Although its hardly a problem caused by american politics alone, they are deliberately accelerating it
