FFA Cup R16 - Sydney FC vs Macarthur - 8/12/21

Has anyone woken hilly?

No player changes will fix how predictable we play all overall.

Good to see Hoff back and have a decent cameo.

I wouldn’t be celebrating that too hard. MacArthur looked to have given up by the 60th minute, especially in Extra Time.

If we could finish, or not stray offside half a billion times in a match, we’d have wrapped that up in 90 minutes in a canter, and have scalloped them back to Campbelltown.

I’ll take the win, but we certainly did it the hardest way possible. Harry VDS was man of the match. Put a great shift in on the right, looking very much like Rhyan Grant in his prime, and a very neat finish to boot.

Honorable mention to Adam Le Fondre who worked his socks off for the whole 120 minutes. Unlucky not to get a goal, but looked hungry all night. He’s going to be having offside nightmares for a while now.

Backing up against the Mariners in Gosford is going to be tough.

I get to go home after 120 minutes against the most boring team in existence. I’m celebrating hard. Of course, I’ll still torture myself on Boxing Day. At least that’s only 90.

The dozen or so Bullpen, bless 'em, looked absolutely exhausted in ET. Of course, we were all bored shitless and they probably all have a fair distance to travel. I’m so glad our games against Bulls are upfront so I don’t have to watch this boring team for the rest of the reg season. I hope they at least put on something decent against the Wanderers.

That was the most turgid game I can remember in years, but if we take any positives it’s:

  • Goal aside Harry was very good, way better than his hit out against Olympic, and if he continues like that we’ll be just fine until Rhyan’s back to his best

  • Goal aside, Donachie was also very solid next to Wilko, between them and Warland we’re fine at CB

  • Fitness aside, if we maintain the box midfield (of course we fucking will) then our best XI includes Hof at CM and Caceres at RM (with only Yazbek for CM depth? :grimacing:)

  • That means Elvis is back to the bit part he was signed for, and only one of Bobo, Kosta, Patty, Trent and Elvis gets to play alongside ALF

  • Although Maxy has done well, he’s going to have to ascend slowly to the throne of Milos

  • It’s a bit Captain Obvious after Brattan went down, but our squad balance is top heavy AF

At least the game is later on Sunday. That will help some tired legs, especially guys like King who I think has played every game so far?

James Donachie is the greatest footballer of all time

Mate I just sat through 120 minutes of average at best football on a Wednesday night in a crowd of 1000. I am celebrating like a madman

Did like Talbot’s cameo

Must have been a brilliant game, fell asleep before halftime!

But the highlights look good.

A victory over the undefeated league leaders, clean sheet and 120 training minutes, goal on debut for a new signing and a sound game from the player who fills in for a NT guy.Not a bad night at the office!

Wild to me that Macarthur charge people so much to go to their games. You couldn’t pay me to go and watch this shit every week.

  • Retre was very good, whenever he tries to do anything remotely creative though I giggle like a school girl. He should stick to being the water carrier. Does that quite well.
  • HVDS should be the new Rhyno. Let’s start thinking where else we can play him, I’m thinking of a deep lying DM role in his future.
  • I’m very conflicted about Trent, are we playing him wrong? Can he do nothing else but run? Can he not shoot? What is his future in this team?
  • Donachie is pretty good, looks like we’ve we solved our McGowan leaving problem, he’ll get better too.
  • Milicic is a soft cock as a coach, the way he set up his team was dirge personified, if you’re going to absorb pressure you can try countering once in a while. Seriously he went into this game to try to get a 0-0 draw, like that hoax of a coach Robinson the other night it didn’t look like he was taking it seriously. That’s against my personal ethos of competition, you try to win everything.
  • Nice to have a bit more depth back in the squad, I’m feeling good about the upcoming games & the recent form is an aberration I’m hoping.

Not a fun game (until we scored) but an interesting one. And one that actually gave me a bit of hope.

Macarthur have really set the standard, so far this season, but we managed to actually totally dominate them. And we did it with a very Sydney FC performance - it took a while, but we strangled them until they eventually gave up the ghost and once they were broken they were really there for the taking. It’s obviously partly due to the way they play, but the fact that their second shot on goal came in the 119th min warmed the cockles of this Graham Arnold appreciater.

Van Der Saag was very impressive. Aside from the goal, his sudden bursts of acceleration into the danger zone have been missed and he was continuing to do it well into the second half of extra time. What a freak!

Better signs from Burgess and Nieuwenhof as well. I would not be opposed to putting Caceres out on the right when we sub on Nieuwenhof (or even starting them that way, when everyone is ready). I thought that worked a treat.

LeFondre was probably robbed of another goal, for another wrong offside decision. That’s got to be frustrating. I reckon he uses that frustration as ammo though.

Some pretty meh performances from others. I thought King looked out of sorts and I forgot Kosta was even on unless he was turning over the ball in our own half… I remain pretty sceptical about his utility at RM. He’s got to be the third best player we have for that position, at best, and that seems like a horrendous use of a foreign spot, let alone a marquee…

But overall a hopeful performance and one we can build on.

For all those people suggesting Grant be moved to DM, have you forgotten Saturday already?
If Valentino Yuel can routinely do him all ends up then imagine what the likes of Davila will do to him in the middle of the park.

Our QF against Brisbane has been locked in for Wed 22/12, I’ve got a fucking wedding.

Who the fuck gets married on a Wednesday?

Cousin. To be fair they’ve had to postpone twice during Covid, I understand plenty of venues are doing midweek packages to get through the backlog.
