First Gear-Grind of the new Forum

Yeah, Ostomy NSW are generally really good and helpful, and costs aren’t too high to get what I need. They probably do need to ask for extra funding to ensure supplies do get through. I’m guessing it is not forthcoming, though. Luckily these dramas do not occur often.

I can sort of get around the issue in the short term, though it will rely on a bit of goodwill from a hospital that have the required supplies. I have literally done everything I can to alleviate troubles going ahead for the next day or two. Just annoyed with Australia Post dropping that stuff off to an address that clearly wasn’t mine.

So a few weeks back I am on the expressway at 6.30am travelling to work when shit starts hitting my windscreen from the truck in front carrying what looks like scrap metal who has not covered their load properly, about 5 seconds of ratt-a-tatt and then one big sound and a huge crack instantly starts forming. I have to slow down straight away but beep and flash my lights, the truck just keeps going while I need to safely pull over. I was annoyed that this gronk had not covered their load, but ultimately knowing I get free windscreen replacement in my insurance, I thought not much I can do and didn’t worry.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I notice my air-con isn’t working. Book it into the mechanic thinking it might just need a re-gas. The mechanic calls me to tell me that air-con line is severed and that the unit is punctured, all needs to be replaced. He tells me it has been damaged by some heavy impact and there is pieces of metal punctured into the unit. I tell him what happened with the windscreen, he agrees that metal has no doubt bounced off the truck and up and under my car. Going to cost $$$ to replace. I will now have to ring insurance but I don’t have the other persons details so will need to $$$ to open excess.

In short, a-hat’s that ruin your week through zero fault of yours can do one.

Do you have a dash cam or the rego of the truck?

Sadly no to either. Because of the damage to the windscreen, I had to drop from 110ish to about 60km pretty quickly and then pull over. I was on my own so the truck just kept going. Annoyingly it had a phone number on the back but I couldn’t get it with trying get into the shoulder safely.

Guessing you didn’t get the company name?

The missus used to work for her parent’s Civil Construction business. They used to get weekly phone calls from people that were trying to scam insurance. They ended up putting GPS and cameras on all their trucks and lo and behold, 99% of the “incidents,” their trucks weren’t on the road at the times specified.

It only had ‘Metal Scrapping’ and then a phone number painted on the back - Metal Scraping was large, the phone number not. I regret not keeping pace with them and trying to get that number, but had to put safety first. The bloke who replaced the windscreen commented to me that I was lucky I didn’t get hurt - so did the mechanic, so you know - guess this is almost the better outcome, even though its going to cost me

Stab in the dark here but if you could come close to replicating the sign (via graphic design - I can help here) you could try putting it through Google Lens to see if any search results come up?

Cameras on the motorway? Any way to get hold of the footage.

We managed to get some footage from a council garbage truck that sideswiped our car with a strongly worded letter with a number of legal threats.

Always safety first. There’s no telling how many people have got themselves into catastrophic/fatal incidents trying catch up/pull over/etc. fuckwits on the road.

I know it’s a bit obvious in hindsight but dash cams really are worth the cost and there should be some good deals going with the Black Friday sales coming up.

A few years I suffered a similar incident on the M5 heading Eastbound in between the Moorebank Ave and Heathcote Road off/on ramps. A truck about 250 meters head had a large, corrugated sheet of roof metal go sailing out the back of his truck fly up in the air and land in my lane (middle). about 20 meters in front me of I had cars on either side of me so I couldn’t merge lanes/swerve out of the way., and I’m going 100km/h.

Ended up shredding two tires and scratching the front left of the bumper really nicely. As it was 250 meters ahead, couldn’t read the license plate, and it was an unbranded truck (one of those Dihatusu/Hino light tippers).

Tried to get in touch with the toll people for camera footage, however they said they wouldn’t release the footage to me without a Police report, or an insurance report.

The damage wasn’t so severe that I wanted the hassle with going through insurance. In the end the cost of the new tyres wasn’t much more than the cost of the excess.

Certainly scared the pants off me. As I watched this hunk of roofing metal arc almost graciously in slow motion towards me, I was having final destination flashbacks.

I travel the M5 everyday, and it’s a seldom trip you don’t see some sort of debris that’s fallen off a truck on the road/side of the road. People don’t secure their loads nearly well enough.

Still waiting for the day when a beer truck loses it’s load. That’ll be worth it.

I had this with a huge sheet of glass of a truck that flew up in the wind, ended up hitting my car on the full and shearing the driver’s side mirror clean off. Hate to think what would have happened if it went through the windscreen instead. Also never got the driver details but i suspect given how far it flew, even with a dashcam wouldnt have picked it up. That said, ive never owned one… happy to take recommendations if anyone has them

House hunting.

We’re in the same boat. Went to auction a few weeks ago where the house went for 300k above expected. We dropped out and there were still two overseas buyers bidding… They really need to stop overseas buyers from purchasing, it’s complete bs

Lost my wallet this morning SOMEWHERE on the way to work, slightly annoying.

To be honest, the lost cards and such isn’t a huge deal. Locked my credit card via the app immediately and licence, Medicare etc can be reordered online. Just a little sad to have lost the actual wallet.

Bought it in Tokyo the week Fukushima happened, 12 years ago, have since travelled the world with it. Europe, the Americas, east, west and central Asia. Surprised how disappointed I am by this. It was still in good condition and may very well have had it for years more.

That’s annoying, but made me realise I haven’t carried my wallet in about a year (maybe more). With digital licence in the Service NSW app I literally have no use for it.

That sucks.

I was scuba diving about 20 years ago and while we were underwater someone broke into my mates car and nicked some stuff including my wallet. Similarly, it was the actual wallet I was most upset about losing.

The funny thing was that it wasn’t even a nice expensive wallet. Just some cheap fake Gucci thing I picked up on a trip through Asia as a kid with my family.

But I’d had it for years, and it was perfectly shaped to my arse cheek, so it was a real loss to me.

Places going for massive overs of the guide is the norm and it seems to be a right of passage to have your hopes dashed 10 times over of places you seriously like.

My partner and I are in the process of buying our first place, ended up getting it £45k below the asking price. It’s just a 1 bed flat in a beautiful 200 year old Georgian terrace in a conservation area. The local council are trying to make the street a low traffic neighbourhood too, so through traffic will hopefully be banned soon which should pump the value up.

The process of purchasing a property here is painful though, the process is so slow compared to Oz, the conveyancing process can take 16 weeks alone. Even with no chain either end, it is just dragging on. We were hoping to be in before Christmas, but that is looking a bit too optimistic at this stage.

No chain is amazing. The number of horror stories of one link not settling breaking it all down is incredible. I’d take the liner settlement over a chain. Fingers crossed no gazumping for you.
