We knew about this already, I thought?
It’s so wild that it’s so recent that the APL brought in another salary cap exempt player spot and even some quarters were talking about scrapping the cap.
Now there’s clubs that are going to be flat out meeting the salary cap floor.
We knew a cut was coming but the rumours I saw were 800k-1mil. 530 is far less
Can see a number of clubs not lasting the season unfortunately. This is really bad news. Hopefully they can pull another broadcast deal out of their arse somehow
A lot of commentary about the salary cap being 2.5 mil and the APL only distributing $530k…
But that’s only that mens salary cap. Surely that going towards the women’s too?
PS.
Just as a point of reference - the NRL distributed 21.3 mil per club last season and still operate at a sizable surplus.
7 million total for A league vs 363.7 mil for NRL.
Surely we’ve gotta be looking at other broadcast options. These club distributions are totalling under $7m for the season $0.53m x 13 clubs) where in the past it was closer to $25m ($2.5m x 10 clubs).
The value of the rights to the league can’t have fallen to near a third of its former value. And if they have, we will need to be strategic about chasing profile and synergies with other rights rather than dollars - Stan or Optus would be good bedfellows as they’ve already got football content and we’d be able to support and broaden their audience.
Could we get a link not hosted on those fucking grubs who helped get the ball rolling by playing the cunt during COVID?
I assume club distributions would be revenue less centralised costs, not 100% of broadcast revenue?
It might be ($25m + $2.5m × 10) $50m down to $30m ($23m + $0.53m × 13)?
The other thing I’m wondering is whether this is a one-off austerity squeeze to boost the league balance sheet over the next 12 months, or whether this reflects expectations for a long-term sustainable level.
Conroy is talking about “right-sizing” the league, fwiw.
Very interesting paragraph:
We are committed to right-sizing the A-Leagues which is why we’ve been focused on cutting costs across the leagues, growing our core football product and uniting the football pyramid to support the growth of our game.

Huh. Are they preparing to surrender some of the broadcast revenue to an NSD?
Surely the NSD isn’t going to happen now
My crazy idea was/is:
Joey Lynch asked him about pro/rel and Conroy said it’s not on the table.
I blame Danny fucking Townsend.
(Sure, he’s been gone a while now, but I like to hold a grudge)
What were the viewing figures like for last season compared to the “peak” on foxtel? Have the viewers left? Does FTA actually attract more eyeballs?
I’ve said before, it always felt like more people watched it when it was leading into the EPL… which is why I’d love to see Optus pick it up
Well get on the phone to Gladys then.
