Always found it weird they have some events before the opening ceremony
Always found it weird they have some events before the opening ceremony
was just thinking the same thing. It’s the weirdest concept in the world
Stuff like the football, etc, where you need a couple of days between games I get, but the 7’s rugby is unusual, as they usually knock a tournament over in 2-3 days. Maybe a ground availability issue?
Surely in Paris there’s more than enough stadiums in and around that can host a football/rugby game.
Maybe it’s about cost, they did say Paris would try to minimise the expenses across the board for this Olympics. Not spreading things out over more venues than necessary, I don’t know?
The Sevens mens comp goes 24th and 25th at Stade de France, a day off for the Opening Ceremony then the medal games on the 26th. Womens comp is 28th, 29th, 30th.
They are also hosting the athletics there from a quick google. So it’s just about scheduling really.
Replace football with futsul and do the whole tourney in a local rec centre in 4 days.
Bit of a chaotic start to the football.
I watched the first 20 minutes or so and it was loud. The Moroccan fans were making alot of noise.
Longest VAR ever?
I know most people don’t rate it but I love the men’s Olympic football. Randoms teams, players you’ve never heard of.
Gives me flashbacks to world cups growing up before you could watch whatever football whenever you want.
I remember going to see the Olyroos play at Sydney 2000. Let’s just say the other team (Honduras?) didn’t play with the Olympic spirit that day…….or was it Costa Rica. I always get those 2 mixed up. Terrible game
You were right at first, it was Honduras.
Apparently had a bit to do with one of the Argentine players posting a video of himself singing a very racist song on the way back from the Copa
I think the Argentina football team will be very unpopular for the duration of this tournament as a result of that song and the doubling down on it in the aftermath.
It’s the Olympics in general. It’s a fucking lot of money for an overblown, two week athletics carnival that is exploited for ridiculous self aggrandisement by political entities.
And I’m lovin’ every minute of it!
Sitting down for an arvo of handball.
I respect the amateur sports that have the Olympics as their top event over a four-year cycle. They deserve a couple of weeks in the world spotlight. The professional sports (at least those that actually pay well) that still go to the Olympics are far less compelling.
Watched a bit of the Women’s handball between Denmark and Slovenia. Good stuff played in the right spirit
