Seriously?? One look at Italy, just one, please. Google Italy hospitals and maybe you’ll see exactly HOW this is going. I dare say the mental risks of people self isolating are a whole lot lower than the mental risks of seeing hospitals spilling with infected people, all begging for help and being sorted by age. They have literally stopped giving ventilators to those over 60 in order to save the lives of those under 60. Would you be able to make that sort of call? Because someone will and I can guarantee it will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
The data is available to break down your data, however, I was not looking for answers here nor medical advice but rather opening up (hopefully anyway) a different avenue of thought.
I wanted to point out that there are many many other health related issues at play that people are vulnerable to with similar (or worse) numbers, transmission rates, death rates etc. and we shouldn’t be totally focusing on this only.
Go look for the data to breakdown Italy’s numbers…there are some pretty crystal clear conclusions that can be drawn and have been made by health experts.
I wouldn’t underestimate mental health either, that is an eternal social disease. There’s examples mentioned above of what can be triggered if lockdowns, isolation are prolonged beyond the general human social acceptance.
The death rate is only an order of magnitude worse than a bad seasonal flu but there’s a whole host of other reasons why this is a much bigger deal. No immunity whatsoever within the population, roughly double the transmission rate, and the fact that the capacity of the hospital systems is geared to cope with the flu surge and nothing more (and rightly so, it’s crazy to have thousands of spare ICU beds).
The disease itself is pretty bad but not horrific for the majority of people. I originally focused on this point and downplayed it too, but the problem is the number of people who’ll catch it could totally overwhelm the health service. At that point, a large number of people will basically be without access to a modern health care system, plus anyone in a medical emergency for any other reason is going to have less support.
Totally agree with you here. These are very valid reasons and the healthcare system needs to be managed, remedies/medicine needs to get up to speed etc. and have no argument to anything you’ve mentioned.
I’m concerned that prolonged self imprisonment can trigger other health issues. I don’t know the answer and would not want to be in the position to make any calls because people along the way will either like or dislike whats happening.
Of course you can blame it on an older population etc. But then have a look at the numbers throughout Europe. There’s shit going down throughout the world where in some countries, the younger generations are being hit and in others the older. In any case, there is zero ways to fight this thing. We have no medicine or vaccines. The elderly (by the looks of it) are extremely susceptible. The point stands is that 1% of the population can die, if we don’t flatten out the curve. Would you be really happy for 250,000 people to be wiped out of this country? That and throw in the fact that we’re about to be hit by a flu season on top of all this?
For sure, but you have to weigh the risks. There’s no question that the virus is a bigger risk than the lockdown.
I thought that having the football on would be a flicker of light in a dark time, but when it was on I honestly couldn’t get invested. It just doesn’t matter at a time like this, and it’s putting people in harm’s way unnecessarily.
EDIT: This reads more dismissively than I intended. You’re absolutely on to something and you’d hope someone in government is looking at it, but with these useless fucks in charge, I really doubt it. Makes it even more important to look out for the people you care about.
the fact is there are still tens of thousands of people that basically need to be out and about to survive - there are 20 people working at my local IGA, interacting with hundreds of customers daily who are out buying food to eat. do the maths on that, let alone every IGA/Coles/Woolworths across the nation.
people working in Centrelink offices today? that is the financially vulnerable exposed.
a few hundred people playing A League games with hygeine measures in place just isn’t a big deal mathematically when you consider the above is at play.
I appreciate your view, and just want to clarify I’m not trying to argue for the sake of arguing. I’m trying to offer a rationalised opinion without trying to offend anyone or opinions.
First of all, 250k people dying in this country? Where is that from? Italy, even before this occurred, has one of the lowest levels of healthcare in the globe. 99% of deaths there are the elderly with at least 1 pre-existing condition (i think it was around 40-50% for 2 or more pre-existing conditions). So, from what I’ve read and discovered…that is an unfortunate cocktail of events and it is tragic regardless.
I won’t carry on cause this is sensitive for all of us, but dont underestimate the mental health beast if this is prolonged. I agree measures need to be in place now, possibly even closing up for a short period, but anyone shouldn’t disregard relative anarchy either if this is the approach taken to control this thing.
agree, also noting that 400,000-700,000 people die globally of the flu each year and no one has cared about it at all before all this.
just an interesting point, not saying it’s wrong or right, but i just wonder if we begin to see numbers of 1m dead how badly the media is going to milk it for all it’s worth as they are doing now which in turn perpetuates more hysteria.
Avigan aka Favipavir has proven effective as a medicine.
Developed by FujiFilm in 2014,the rights to manufacture it was bought by the Chinese in 2016!..funny about that, the curve has flattened there and their factories are getting back to normal while the rest of the world locks down.
the 250k dying is the 1% death rate based off of 25 million people. Yes that’s the extreme worst case scenario but that’s generally what a leader needs to prepare for, in the hope that we never get to that point. The majority of people dying in Italy now, are purely due to the fact that they have zero space left in their hospitals. They are at full capacity and are having to chose who to save.
Whatever your point in writing these questions, the fact of the matter is that there really aren’t any differing opinions about this flu in the medical profession, the experts in the field. You’re not an expert and neither am I, but at the end of the day, I’m going to listen to what doctors are saying. The media does sensationalize but EVERY doctor and nurse I’ve spoken to, has separately said how bad this could potentially be, especially if we don’t shut up shop.
These are a summary of the rules for the Grand Final Competition
I am having trouble finding the full rules but according to the summary - the Championship and Premiers cannot be determined until all 27 rounds have to be played and each club has played each other three times.
i will take these with a grain of salt since this season is only 26 games and we don’t play teams 3x each lol…going by these rules we would never have won it.
