While I will never condone this sort of shit as it’s disgusting in general, but I’m assuming the person in question had been vocal about Israel taking over Gaza and pro war? I mean if people spout shit like that, they’re generally inviting retribution. No different to that guy that was spouting the whole “your body my choice” stuff that then had his address posted online. From memory, it was roundly applauded what happened to him.

Genuine question - why is there a need for new antisemitism laws? Surely we already have hate-speech/intimidation/terrorism/other laws that could be used for this?
Cynically it seems like politicians pandering to an arguably influential subsection of the population?
Otherwise if there is not a law that covers these shitty acts, why not make laws that will last and be applicable to any minority group being specifically and inappropriately targeted?

Even if this individual approved of the actions by Israel, I’m not sure if this kind of collective responsibility is an appropriate response. Otherwise the IDF going into Gaza was entirely appropriate because Gaza had lots of people that approved of October 7.

edit: not in the article linked above was the fact that the burnt car had “Fuck Jews” spray painted on. Not “Fuck Some Jews” or "Fuck Jews (the bad ones that is). Unless they didn’t get around to finishing it.

I see what you’re saying, but what shits me, is the concept that the word “anti-semetism” even exists. Why does it have to be something specific, racism against black people has existed even longer than racism against Jewish people, yet there’s no need to specifically separate it out. The bigger issue is the fact that the government somehow feels the need to specific laws to protect Jewish people, when there’s rightly already general laws against racism in general. What, is it somehow worse to be racist against a Jewish person?

This seems like a perfect time to remind everyone that Jews are not the only semites in the world. Semites are classified as people speaking a semitic language. That includes Arabic as well as Hebrew. The Akkadians and Phoenicians from the past were also semites.

Meanwhile, I note with the peace deal that Israel’s cabinet is still kicking up a stink about the deal having not approved it, and the IDF continues that important work of rooting out the terrorists (ie they’ve killed dozens more in the last day, but I’m sure most of them are really bad and dangerous). Basically it will take another bully (Trump) to go off at them before these bullies finally stop their shit.
Trump told Netanyahu “do what you have to do”. I guess we will have to find a nastier bully to get Israel to back down. That could be a hell of a process.
Yes, having this particular bully calling shots isn’t great. To my knowledge he’s never shown the slightest indication of acknowledging that the Palestinian people are suffering, and that this is bad. He’s just keen to get a deal because he doesn’t want there to a be a war on while he’s president. That much we can agree is good. Unfortunately, his version of an acceptable peace involves Israel grabbing more land everywhere, and controlling everything.

It appears to be a case of mistaken identity as he did the house 3 years ago.
I don’t condone anything like this but I can understand why he’d be a target.

Antisemitism is a real thing. It mostly comes from the far right, rarely from people within the Palestine movement actively. When Hezbollah types tried to start “fuck the Jews” chants at an Opera house protest a while back, the Palestinian organisers denounced them.
Whoever did the graffiti and vandalism is either looking to hijack a groundswell of disgust with Israel and steer it in a racist direction, or someone who has been sucked in by ethno-racial explanations of the conflict in Gaza.
