It's OK to be White and other dogwhistles - the Australian politics thread

Ray Martin got pretty close

Even if the Yes campaign had produced the best possible campaign, it would have still lost once Peter Dutton decided to place personal politics above the national good.

And don’t forget that a lot of the work for the Voice and the Uluru statement had been done under a LNP government with bipartisan support. Dutton voted No to a policy largely developed under a government of which he was a minister.

There was like a decade of bipartisan support to the voice, until Dutton tried to use it as a wedge to win votes.

Didn’t the LNP voice support end under Turnbull, who immediately declared the Statement of the Heart’s request for a constitutionally enshrined Voice a third chamber of parliament and shut the door on it?

Looks like the kind of guy that some very strong opinions about the age of consent.

I know things like this shouldn’t be politicised, but the LNP deserve to have their actions regarding Bruce Lehrmann hung over them for eternity.

Possibly would’ve been better for the (alleged) victims that he wasn’t named until after the trial.

Yep. There’s a familiar feeling about all of this.
Just wait for another mistrial and the victim to be deemed unable to endure another trial so he gets to maintain his innocence again.

Has anyone actually asked Brittany Higgins whether she wanted to pursue another trial or not?

Yeah I never got the straight of that either. I would assume she’d have been consulted but that’s giving the justice system a lot of credit I think.

It’s easy to believe that Ms Higgins wasn’t emotionally up for another trial given all the scrutiny she was under. I reckon she could be empowered to try again, though, in light of this development.
