It's OK to be White and other dogwhistles - the Australian politics thread

I may be an outlier on economic policy, but IDGAF about gotcha muckraking over “broken promises”. I’m in favour of arguing over policies.

I was personally in favour of cancelling the stage 3 cuts all along and I think that’s what Labor should have done straight away after they discovered some black holes left by the incompetent Morrison, but I do understand that’s the kind of thing that just stirring up the hornets nest and ending the honeymoon early.

That’s a different kettle of fish to looking at them two years after that election fight. Any policy being argued now is essentially what you’re taking to the next election, especially if Hanson and the indies can block it in the Senate.

Nonetheless, having promised economic policy in January 2022 doesn’t mean you have to stick with it in January 2024. We’ve just lived through two years of the worst global inflation in memory.

He wants an election now against someone who just gave 11m people a tax cut. I get the “lying” argument, but I don’t think it will be as effective as they think when instead of breaking a promise and taking things away, they’re breaking it in order to give them money

I hope Albanese sets the election for tomorrow. Dutton will get fucking wrecked.

From the Herald Sun apparently.

Just remember Range Rovers and annual ski trip to Aspen don’t pay for themselves.

I would love to be in the financial position to be able to be kicked in the teeth like that.

That reads exactly like an Errol Parker article in the Betoota. Amazing.

If you earn 440k as a household and missing 8k is stopping you buying a property you need help.

You mean buying their second investment property.

Not quite sure where to put this, and part of me feels like a killjoy for posting… But has anyone got an argument for why Emma McKeon wins young Australian of the year? Surely her award for winning 7 gold.medals is 7 gold medals? And at 29 barely scrapes under the 30 year old age limit for “young”. Sure she’s impressive,it’s a big achievement. Feeling a bit bah humbug, but surely there’s a young Australian out there with an achievement better or more inspiring than being good at swimming? Guess it is inspiring, but… Weird one.

I’ll stop yelling at clouds now.

Yeah I thought we were past giving Australian of the year awards to people for being good at sport.

Agree. Should have been Courtnee Vine.

I thought the same thing.

If we were going to give it to a young female sportsperson then surely Mary Fowler would make more sense.
Not disparaging her achievements but what hardships did Emma McKeown come up against in her pursuit of swimming success? Pretty sure a white girl from a middle-class family found it pretty easy, providing she put in the hard work, to make it in her chosen field.
How about those women of colour coming from broken families that pushed through all of that adversity just to have a chance?

Loren Ryan would’ve been a great choice although at 28 you’d still have to ask if that’s too old.

Looking over the list of Australians of the year, seems like pure sports people are on there everywhere. Aus cricket captain seems to be an automatic gong, with the exception of Ponting, for shame. So maybe I’ve jumped the gun.

But at least make sure they’ve done something useful with their fame like Steve Waugh (clutching at straws). Alan bond also on the list for the LOLs, presumably for America’s cup win rather than his spotless business acumen. Who cares if you’re good at (paying for) sport?

Really? I counted 14 sporting personalities in 64 years and some of them were fairly decent choices like Cathy Freeman for instance. I think there were maybe 4 cricket captains?

In terms of Emma McKeown, she’s the most successful Australian Female athlete of all time. That’s a pretty amazing achievement. I don’t see why her being white or not having to suffer growing up would preclude her from the award?

As far as I can tell, Fowler didn’t exactly have it tough growing up, apart from maybe having to live in Qld. It even looks like she came from her own middle class family. You’re obviously looking at it through football glasses, but she hasn’t really achieved anything absolutely amazing on the global stage. Yes she’s really good at football, but there’s significantly more footballers better than her, whereas there’s no one really better than Emma in multiple different events on the world stage

I think Australia of the Year awards should be for those generally not as well-known. The only exceptions should be if they’ve made a difference on a global scale.

I’ve got no issues with the swimmer getting it, but I don’t think we have had an Olympics in the last year. Surely she should get the award in the year she did something?

Pretty interesting read.
