It's OK to be White and other dogwhistles - the Australian politics thread

Seriously.

It’s a bit weird though isn’t it? So ASIO doesn’t want to reveal who the person was, even though that person has apparently been dealt with. If that person has been dealt with, wouldn’t that reveal, to the spy organisation, who it actually was? It wouldn’t be hard for them to deduce just how many Australian politicians were in their pocket and then suddenly stopped being in their pocket.

You don’t want to reveal who it is because you want the foreign power to think that their contact is now compromised. If you name the compromised person as person x, the powers courting persons y and z will know they’ve escaped detection.

What does being dealt with mean?

On the face of it, it sounds ridiculous. Surely it’s not helpful to say “you must not help with a foreign government/be treasonous, but if you do we’ll wag a finger at you”. Why is this person not in prison, especially as an MP? Sure you want to protect your methods etc, but just deal with them at a time of your choosing. I would think a deterrent to others would help?

Apart from the fact we are meant to be a strong democracy with justice at least seen to be done?

This is a fucking democracy. That person was elected to represent their constituents and worked for a foreign government against their interests. It is utterly essential that the public know who they were, who bought them, and what repercussions there were for their acts.

Also Sussan Ley is a horrible piece of shit - no shock there I know but this is particularly dispicable.

Both sides are complicit in this cover up.
Why isn’t Albo under the same scrutiny as Dutton? At least Old Potato Head has put his position forward and walked back on it.

That’s 2 more positions than Anthony Albanese.

I wanna know how many positions he’s had per 90mins, tho.

At least Richard Marles knows who it is
but let’s not speculate.

Is he not?

Dutton is copping it because he’s a clueless politically and they instantly jumped on it and then backflipped. I’m sure he was either told it’s a lib/nat or that it happened while he was home affairs minister and they kept it secret.

Labour are usually just as guilty of trying to keep shit secret that should be open air in a democracy. The secrecy provisions in the NACC legislation demonstrate that most obviously recently.

Good guys: “Hello media! We got senator bloggs for espionage!”

Bad guys: “what technique did we use on bloggs? Let’s never use that again”

Good guys: “why has communication through this channel suddenly stopped? There was so much good Intel and we were doing good discovering their wider network”.

Some of you need to re-watch the wire.

“Yo Marles, yo where the fuck is Sam Dastayari at? Yo, where he at, Marles?”

Bad guys: Hey why did that source stop co-operating?
Bad guys: Must have been uncovered. Time to change up.

I mean cmon.

Yeah
 nah
retired politician - probably means someone on the margins like Mal Meninga or our mate Glenn Lazarus - see how I taint rival codes?
But more seriously, there’s literally hundreds of backbenchers or obscure senators that don’t know anything but will have the PM’s number because their kids play in the same footy team.
It might even be a Chief of Staff, something like a Peta Credlin that can technically be called a politician, but really is not.
That’s why ASIO wouldn’t name them - the innuendo is way better than the member for Woop Woop

The only family member of a PM that makes sense is Alex Turnbull given you need someone of age to be approached.
Rudd and Morrison’s kids too young, and Gillard and Albanese didn’t have any.

Alex has come out and said he was approached by Chinese interests over his father’s PM time, and the group had links to a NSW Labor politician.

Seems he rejected and reported the approach to Aus authorities. (Very different to the sons of the last two US presidents)

Alex is a former Goldman Sachs banker who established a hedge fund turned family office in Singapore in 2015 which was when Malcolm became PM.

So that would narrow it to NSW Labor over 2015-2018

Someone like Obeid or Sir Lunchalot you could easily believe would be swayed with money

While I’m certain that’s not your objective, it’s that exact kind of innuendo that the LNP are banking on making a difference come the next election.

Memories don’t really last that long in today’s media byte cycle
this is all about influencing today’s by-election in Melbourne. If there’s a massive swing against the government they might keep banging on about it.

that made me laugh. Thank you

How exactly does naming the person expose ASIO’s sources? Surely the other country knows their name and that ASIO also knows. This only makes sense if the “traitor” in question were to seek legal remedy and demand proof of ASIO’s assertions, but surely that would be digging themselves a much larger hole then the one they are already in?
