Jack Black cancelled the event.
Jack Black cancelled the event.
And hes left wing. FACT
Thatās kinda my point. What the right calls cancel culture is people self censoring, distinct from being banned.
Liberalism and leftismā¦not quite the same. Heās safe, American-style, āappeal to civilityā liberal. Also, a Zionist.
In any case, many cases of so-called cancel culture are indeed people themselves withdrawing from things or apologising about things because of a backlash*. There was a backlash to Kyle Gassās (awesome) comment and Tenacious D at large and Jack Black pulled the plug. The idea that any time āleftistsā or whatever react badly to something itās ācancel cultureā but people reacting badly to a comment against a right-wing politician not being cancel culture is bizarre to me, but YDY.
*Case in point: That NASA dude who wore the nudey shirt admitting it was an unprofessional outfit for the event. He got over it, the people upset about the shirt go over it, others were still complaining about him being ācancelledā.
You can agree to disagree on some things, like pineapple on pizza. Iām never going to āagree to disagreeā over whether Trump is a good person or not while he talks about obliterating 90 million Iranians.
Also, weāre still talking about Gass? Well, he apologised and Jack Black pulled the plug, so clearly they didnāt think they were free from consequence. Also, what was Gass supposed to agree to disagree on? Trump being shot in the ear? Trump himself?
Youāre asking for civility in the face of incivility, but great. Awesome. Amazing. Must be fun to disagree with Trumpās politics yet for him to pose not actual threat to you.
Thatās literally cancel culture though. Itās not right wing government censoring stuff, itās individuals in these governments censoring stuff because they have the power.
Thatās the exact same thing.
I mean, we can decide a phrase can mean anything we want, I suppose.
But my understanding is that generally, people take ācancellingā someone and government censorship to be different things.
Thereās a practical difference. Materials banned by the government canāt be accessed, obtained etc (generally. Black markets are seperate). Ricky Gervais was ācancelledā but his work is obviously widely available. I donāt run the risk of state sanction for watching a rerun of The Office.
Itās not the same thing.
Give it time.
I think you canāt ignore thereās been a rise of what weāre calling ācancel cultureā, as distinct from either popular campaigns to have events, media etc cancelled, government censorship, or some degree of both. The Springboks didnāt get ācancelledā and neither did the Beatles when they said they were bigger than God.
Both of those kinds of things have happened throughout modern history but something changed in the early noughties. You can say itās the social media element if you like, which is part of it, but itās also the fact that basically everyone is walking around with a video camera at all times now, which was not the case prior to around 2010-2015 depending on your country. People canāt say whatever they like and have the words disappear into thin air anymore, they are very often being recorded and able to be distributed globally in seconds. That leads to a culture of accountability and hyper-vigilance that pressures people into self-censorship.
The right are trying to cancel abortions, contraceptives, healthcare, divorce, feminism and numerous other rights. But the left are trying to stop people from being racists or shit human beings, and thereās an equivalence?
Get in the fucking bin
The standard only works one way. Itās Mel Brooksā definitions of tragedy andcomedy, but applied to politics:
āTragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.ā
You said this and earlier you said ācancel cultureā began in 2010.
When Universities in the US started studying gun violence and began producing data that contradicted the assertions of the NRA, the Dickey Amendment was passed by a Republican dominated congress. The effect of this legislation was that any higher education institution in the US could lose all their federal funding (ie: not just the funds given for the study of gun violence) if they studied gun violence. The year this happened was 1997.
Honestly, if you think any of the following;
That cancelling began in 2010,
That only the left in the US cancels,
That the right in the US has not been deliberately targeting progressive academics and their successes far out way anything the left has done.
You are an idiot.
Typically, people who are ācancelledā have done something heinous. Itās not just stealing a chocolate bar. Mostly, itās warranted.
Some exceptions obviously apply.
Also, the public cancelling someone is somewhat different to a government censoring something IMHO (not in all cases obviously - some censoring is due to public outcry/rage).
Barnaby swiftly back on the sauce it seems.
Speaking to an anti-renewables rally at Lake Illawarra south of Sydney on Sunday, Joyce compared ballot papers to bullets and urged the crowd to āload that magazineā at the voting booth against the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, and the energy minister, Chris Bowen.
āAnd the bullet you have is that little piece of paper and it goes in their magazine called the voting box and itās coming up,ā he said in footage of the rally shown on the Seven network.
āGet ready to load that magazine. Goodbye, Chris. Goodbye, Albo.ā
āThe ballot paper is the weapon you have ā it shouldnāt be a bullet, it should be a ballot paper and the ballot box,ā he said on Monday morning, before continuing to criticise wind turbines.
āIt is like saying the fertilising capacity and the beauty of dog turd on your lawn in the middle of the morning works as well. [Itās] absolutely disgusting. Nobody wants them.ā
Fuck me.
Our staff have actually been threatened by those in the New England region over renewables. Hence the bullet comments - seems Barnaby is saying stop mailing people bullets and vote them out instead, albeit poorly.
thatās just fucked that someone could actually see that as a valid way to make their pointā¦
Even sober he is a cunt.
in fairness I meant people sending in bullets
