I know Macarthur have struggled to get a fanbase and a lot of that is their fault, but sports across the board are struggling for crowds at the moment.
The FFA wanted to boot the Phoenix based on failing metrics.
What do Macarthur and Western United bring to the table that Wellington donāt - and I surely donāt think theyād be meeting the metrics the FFA used to have.
I assume the APL have their own set of metrics, but I daresay both Macarthur and Western are falling well short.
While I agree the NZ rights are obscenely low, probably not even covering the costs of shuttling teams back and forth.
Itās not like if you relocate the team to Canberra or Hobart you automatically pickup extra $s from the Aus rights. Indeed the number may well be zero.
Definitely was NSFW, which is why I didnāt post the photo of it. But he offered the name āCumā and had at least a dozen likes last time I checked. Itās probably been deleted by now.
They were originally backed by the very wealthy Walker family, but then sold quite discretely to some local business people. I know they made a tonne of corporate sponsorshipās, but no idea the amount they made/make from thoseā¦
Has been a tough start, playing only in Covid ravaged seasons which have given them crappy opportunities to attract crowds and interest generally. I know stacks of people who were originally quite excited about going to games, mostly all families, who have yet to go because of Covid related thingsā¦and now general apathy towards doing anything deemed ānot essentialā.
Theyāve certainly not done themselves any favours, though. That fiasco with the pitch made me wonder how serious the club actually was. Not to mention a forgettable off-season where they looked destined to be well out of finals contention.
Wouldnāt surprise me. As mentioned above, theyāve started in the worst possible situation with COVID which has affected all teams, but theyāre behind the 8 ball to begin with as theyāre trying to attract a fan base.
However, the club from Day 1 seems to have been so badly managed, Iām surprised itās not being run by the Liberal Government. Theyāre more successful on the field than North Queensland and New Zealand Knights, but as badly managed off the park as them. Hell, Iād argue that North Queensland Fury attracted a larger supporter base than Macarthur.
Wouldnāt be surprised if they fold and Canberra walks in.
For all we know, it could mean enough players have been struck down with Covid that they canāt play. I find it very hard to trust Macarthurās management at the moment.
