You’re right, everyone would have E Bikes now
BMX Bandits is a god damn classic and I’ll be damned if I hear anymore slander about it!
I always found it amusing that the Leonard Maltin movie guide books never had BMX Bandits listed under Nicole Kidman’s acting credits.
Tried to watch Anora. Fucking grating accent.
Hey, I tried watching Starship Troopers last night based on your recommendation (I think you posted a top 5 list once), and I could barely make it 10 minutes in, so forgive me if I don’t agree with your taste in movies!
That said, I instead watched The Thin Red Line (another from your list), and loved it. So it turns out I do agree with your taste in movies, and maybe BMX Bandits is a god damn classic.
Tell me why you’re wrong about Starship Troopers, are you immune to satire?
Frog Dreaming is better than BMX Bandits.
The jokes must start after the 10 minute mark, then.
Sorry, but you missed out because Anora is a amazing.
It’s not the joke type of satire. It’s a satire about othering, us/them, using actual aliens instead of another group of humans that the narrative has decided are aliens. It’s purposely over acted with very beautiful actors to mock the archetype of the Aryan Ubermensch.
This is a departure from the book which is really an exploration of a political system and how miscommunication leads to bad things.
Glad you liked The Thin Red Line thou!
But the school stuff at the beginning is a bit slow.
That’s the exposition for the politcal system.
I’ve not read the book in years, I think it’s over halfway though the book before they get out of basic training.
More like two-thirds, in the book they go to Pluto for power armour training and a cadet dies because his power armour heatsink got stuck in the ice.
I think the moral here is everyone should read the book!
I’ll try pick it up again, but that OTT accent just kills me.
10 minutes? The satire starts in the opening shot
Like everyone else has said, watch it as a satirical movie that explores fascism as a mainstream political party and it’s effects on the world. It’s definitely not meant to be taken seriously and a lot of the poor reviews stem from reviewers initially not understanding that it wasn’t an action movie, but rather a satirical exploration.
It’s also worth pointing out that the producers and directors of Starship Troopers 2 & 3 also did not understand Verhooven’s satirical design, they just aped the style without any understanding of what made it work, right down to having the news broadcasts end with “Do you want to know more?” without any of the web browser graphics and links that would make it make sense.
I hated 2. It was a horror/action movie with none of the pomp or anything else. Didn’t actually realise there was a 3
