I’ve done something similar before without the banana leaf or annatto. Can’t say I really bother with recipes all that much for slow cooked meats. Usually just a mixture of what ever dried chilis I have plus cumin and coriander seed.
You have inspired me to try something with oranges again though. Maybe something like a Cuban pulled pork with a bunch of added dried Mexican chills.
This stuff is great. We use it in our vego taco mix. Can even use it in chilli etc too. Gives it a nice whack of flavour without too much spice at all.
Totally agree. I think it tastes awesome. I mean, probably better if you make your own, but for a jarred chilli paste it’s excellent. Great smokey flavour.
Haven’t tried it yet, but I think it’ll go well in scrambled eggs. Hell, I’ll probably try it on a bunch of things.
That Chipotle is so good. The smokiness is the best. Also can use it in the filling or a burrito mix. Used to be so hard to find so it’s good it’s more accessible these days.
Have we complained about sweet chili yet? What a absolute blight on humanity. “Please give me some chili, also I’m a child/American and can’t eat anything unless it’s lathered in sugar”
Sweet chilli does me in. I also don’t understand why Sweet Chilli (and sour cream) is an acceptable dipping combination for potato wedges, but the moment you whip out a habenero or even a generic ‘chilli’ sauce, people lose their shit and start backing away like you’re holding a radioactive isotope.
My wife is allergic to chilli, but I’ve got a bottle of this (amongst about 20 other chilli sauces) on the go in the fridge/larder.
Now it’s a nice Chilli sauce. But to me it’s quite sweet. It’s a borderline Sweet chilli sauce for mine, and despite it claiming to be ‘Extra Hot’, to me it’s rather mild. Goes well with Asian finger foods (spring rolls, dim sims, etc).
Now granted, my missus is allergic to chilli and the only chilli I can get away with adding into our food is Cayenne pepper. She accidentally tried some of this and had an instant allergic reaction. But she also claims (as does her father in law, who I swear is going soft in his old age) reckons this off the scoville scale in heat.
In other chilli related news, over the weekend I planted a fresh batch of habanero and scorpian trinidad chillies in my garden. Hopefully my newly acquired green thumb goes well and I can turn these into some nice sauces.
I was thinking about it the other night when it came with some salt and pepper squid. In my head I dislike it and don’t see the point. But every time I have it with something its fine.
Not my first choice but its always pleasant enough.
The closest thing to sweet chilli that I’ve actually enjoyed was this perri peri tomato chutney that I found at a little Farmers Market out near Camden a couple of years ago. Proper spicey and wasn’t the sickly sweet stuff you associate with most commercial ‘sweet chilli’ sauces.
I don’t want to lower the tone of the conversation but apparently there’s a Taco Bell in China town which I didn’t know about. Has anyone tried it? Is it worth a trip into town to try?
Much worse than any of those three, really cheap, nasty ingredients and tiny portions, but very compelling when you’re a bit drunk and get the munchies.
I still haven’t had 5 guys since they opened up in Sydney. I’ve heard some pretty daming reviews however that put them on par with the likes of Hungry Jacks, but way more expensive.
Few years ago, mate and I went up the coast on a cruise and wound up at Carls Junior in Bateau Bay. Very similar to Hungry Jacks, and a bit pricer, but was actually a decent feed from memory. Good shake as well.
