Random Football Musings

It’s ludicrous that they have decided that with offside they are prepared to go to a forensic level of detail, whereas with fouls it’s a shrug of the shoulders.
Get. Fucking. Rid.

I’d be willing to put a lot of money on the fact that the margin of error would be a whole lot bigger than 1cm

Yeah that’s what my thought was too. Not to mention that you get down to a point where the frame you stop it on would play a huge role in determining offside or not.

The inconsistency in application is infuriating. Compare that last night to Zullo in the HAL GF where he was clearly on, but deemed too close to overrule (not “obvious enough” error etc).

Offside should be so simple. Son was a perfect example of one where it wasn’t called by the linesman, you’ve reviewed it and it’s THAT fucking close, benefit of the doubt to the attacking team. Done. But once again the powers that be manage to over complicate the fuck out of it.

It goes deeper than that. The footage is reportedly filmed at 50fps, so someone running at even 10km/h is covering 5.6cm/frame. So even if (a) you correctly pick which two frames it’s between, (b) which of the two it’s closer to, your average error is 1.4cm (and up to 2.8cm).

VAR is stupid.

That’s all you need to know.

I haven’t seen the “other” frame, but this error rate would be irrelevant if both of them (i.e the one before the ball has left the boot, and the one after) have him in an offside position, yeah?

If those frames happen to be the moment of him being on-/off-side… then defs a margin-of-error issue.

VAR is karma for everyone who has bitched at a referee getting something wrong.

The effects of relativity must also come into it. Where is the timekeeper when the offside occurs? Where the ball is played? Where the player receives? The ref? Where they are also determines the when.

Correct question is have the taken into account of time/distance that light has travelled to hit the camera. Also, were there any changes in air density in between this/particles that could bend the light as it passes over.

Also, is the Coriolis effect taken into account?

Barca has been slapped with a fine for their opening of negotiations directly with Griezman rather than with Athletico Madrid. Not sure how they get around FFP no with the 300 Euro fine. It’ll hit them hard with potentially having to now sell Coutinho for cheap to pay it off…

Got stuck in a wikihole this morning, who knew Tasmania already had a team in the Bundesliga? Surely they’re ready for HAL expansion.

Anyone know anything better to do with an old pair of football boots that are still in good condition than drop them in a Vinnies bin?

One of them charities that provides used boots to kiddies in third world countries?

Or put them up for free on Gumtree?

If you’re in the Marrickville area, at Mackey Park they have racks of boots next to the canteen. When we have old ones in decent condition, we leave them there and they can be made use of by those who can’t afford them, and even those who forgot their boots on the day.

A very specific salary cap exemption for rookie strikers eligible for the NT. So not Jamie Maclaren but maybe George Blackwood is exempt. As a way to get more Socceroos striker. Discuss…
