Round 12 - Sydney FC vs Melbourne City - 29/12/19

I will make a better thought out post tomorrow but just to call it out: Caceres played incredible tonight. Didn’t put a foot wrong, and got past 2,3 & 4 players on occasion as well as getting the assist. He would walk into any sides first 11, but i like him coming on for ABJ if things aren’t quite working.

Baumjohann had some good moments, but it was pretty clear City’s aim was to shut him out of the game by any means.

Yoof down 3-2 at HT. Decent but just can’t defend.

I’m off but given the comp to date I expect a final score of 8-6 either way.

The last 15 mins were loud. The whole end - all the GA bays plus the active bay, and part of the main stand - was in full voice.

That said, up until that point, for a crowd of 17k people you could have heard a pin drop for most of the game (from where I was, not in the main stand). Especially after going down a man, and then having the penalty stopped.

What a performance though.

Ivanovic with a hat trick to level it 3-3 according to the Clubs Twitter, but no updates for half an hour. Guessing it’s looking like a draw?

Flotmann with a goal to put us up 4-3 with 11 to go.

5-3 now with 7 to go. Goal from Swibel.

Great win. Man, Caceres always does a job and makes a difference. Also, Harry van see saag looked quite good when he came on, but I was confused as I was sure he was a defender .

That’s because The Cove is awesome.

He is! 4D chess from Corica

God it’s fantastic how many of those 17k get decked out in merch and sky blue.

The trick is for the club to engage the 3-5k+ that come to these bigger matches two or three times a year, to attend more regularly and encourage friends and family along with them. The potential is definitely there for us to average 17k+ regularly to games, even without an ADP-level drawcard player.

5-3 win for the youth, giving us a sweep for the night.

Can recommend having a listen to Corica’s post match interview from the Club Twitter. Very interesting.

Imagine missing this game.

MOTM voting is where we play against the leagues top scorer with 10 men yet you all still vote for a midfielder.

6 Wilko?

I’ve been pasting Caceres lately for being mediocre but tonight was the best I’ve seen from him in his cameo coming on. If he can consistently do that then we will have some serious depth.

Brattan also played well, slow start with a few stray passes but came into his element. City were well prepared with the set pieces and going short on every dead ball but overall this was one of the most satisfying nights and wins I’ve witnessed. That would be absolutely soul (if that even exists for them) shattering and could derail their season…a bit like what we did to MV.

Cheers to Brilliante for turning over cheap possession too all game, he probably wanted to be in sky blue again.

Oh and if anybody (I.e Andy Harper) wants to tell me Delbridge is a Socceroo, I’m going to throw a plank at them. Ordinary, at best. Has a looongg way to go before he should ever be considered. If he wasn’t 6ft, he wouldn’t get a gig with League 2 Roar
