Round 17 - Sydney FC vs Adelaide - 17/2/24

Anyway we at last have a handful of talented youngsters who are getting regular game time

He, once again, misjudged the flight of the ball. Itā€™s definitely not the first time this season.
He then claims a non-existent shirt pull.

Iā€™d accept that from a GK learning their trade (Pava).
Redders is far too experienced to be making the same mistake over and over again.

We could concede a freak goal from inside Adelaideā€™s box and some posters would still blame Redders.

Itā€™s a collection of errors over the past three seasons. He is shite.

Iā€™m a Redmayne critic, yet I still choose to credit him for making some good saves and interceptions earlier in the game. If he did nothing except that error, Iā€™d be unhappy. But he did some good things that he can build on and hopefully they will stand him in good stead for when it really matters at the back end of the season.

Who were the best on park? Difficult to say. Probably Caceres, Lolley and JGR.

One thing about Redmayne recently is that his excursions out of the box seem more focused and successful. Definitely an area he has improved in the last say 2 months or so.

I like Redders but heā€™s been a bit shit this season, he canā€™t pass the ball out from the back and heā€™s not much of a sweeper. The problem is who can we replace him with next season? Birighitti? A youth player? The other goalkeepers in the league arenā€™t that much better.

Yeah, I think he learned his lesson from the red card incident.

The problem I have is all that he is good at is shot stopping.
Every GK in this league is good at that though. His understudy for the last 5 years is proving that at WU where heā€™s been cannon fodder all season.
Jamie Young is probably the best shot stopper in the league but would you have him here? I wouldnā€™t, the rest of his game is so poor.

This is where Redmayne comes in. Heā€™s a 35yo former national team GK who continues to make the same basic mistakes.
His distribution is terrible, he canā€™t judge a cross and he makes a simple mistake just about every game.

We lost THB because Redders was ā€œundroppableā€ and, while I have concerns that Pava isnā€™t ready, Iā€™d much rather see someone who has a future make those mistakes rather than an experienced professional.

Mackā€™s having a normal one

His obsession with encroachment would be quite amusing if it wasnā€™t conducted from his step mothers basement.

So lots of 7/10 performances out there with no real glaring bad games (maybe Fabio, even then he scored the penalty when it mattered so Iā€™ll give him a pass). Some thoughts on specific players who I thought stood out a bit:

  • Matthews was certainly good tonight, though I think he looked a bit nervy early on and certainly he over-committed on some tackles at various points that led to him being beaten.
  • JGR showing great maturity out there. I canā€™t believe that itā€™s taken less than a season for him to learn a new position and to look comfortable there. He can be first choice in that spot for as long as he wants it.
  • Redmayne up and down tonight but didnā€™t rush out stupidly as much and made some good saves and interventions when called on.
  • Brattan was absolutely everywhere tonight, put in a real shift and kept things moving.
  • Caceres with another good game when he had the free roll. As others have said, I think heā€™s really benefiting from Talayā€™s style.
  • All up not the most exciting game but our pressing was ferocious again and meant that we were crafting chances the whole game.

Fuck thank god Iā€™m not the only person to watch him and think heā€™s a bit rubbish. Commentators have spent the better part of a decade gushing over him and all I can ever think isā€¦ yeah I donā€™t want him at Sydney.

I think @countarch nails itā€¦ lots of 7/10 performances (which is excellent).

I think Fabio was better than people are giving him credit for, pressed well, created a few good chances and is supremely confident with the penalty.

Matthewā€™s grew into the game, JGR was immense and JCP is getting better by the game.

Fabio should have had a shot when he managed to get the ball around the keeperā€¦ Sure it was a tight angle but it was a bloody open goal!

Surprised he didnā€™t get subbed immediately after that

Matthews makes my trousers go a bit funny.

Towards the end of last NPL season he went into beast mode.

Iā€™ll disagree slightly with eddie on Gurd ever having been better. Iā€™ve given Gurdy a lot of leeway and trusted the coaches on why he seemed to be the preferred one, in games Iā€™ve seen he was never markedly better than Grimaldi (now at Newy), Paull (CCM) or Bakrdanikoski (SU58). Might be a case of him having peaked earlier and then plateauing, it happens and injuries havenā€™t helped.

Iā€™ll note again that Matthews was preferred to Paull, although younger he partnered Bakrdanikoski at CB a season before Paull got into our NPL first team. But since Paull left for CCM he has gone through the gears and stepped up deluxe. This from last June  :

TL:DR, some of the non-retentions have hurt (Tilio, Hof, Adamson) but Iā€™m certain weā€™ve nailed others (JK, Pava, Scarcella over Priestman and now Hayden).

He was a joy to watch in the NPL, been really looking forward to these starts

Definitely a game of two halves.

Fabio did weā€™ll to draw his man for the first goal - Brattan giving him a huge head pat as part of the celebration. That being said he needs to play the whistle and be stronger on his feet / goes down too easily and stops playing.

Solid at the back - under a fair bit of pressure in the second half, Matthews was great. Iā€™m wondering if we see JGR move into the midfield when Lacerda is fit? Either way both were really fucking good. Soft goal conceded near the end. Canā€™t really fault them. Grant was also great in patches, still missing a yard of pace under pressure but involved himself well.

Definitely lost our shape with Mak off in the second half, bringing them into the game more. Lolley was immense as usual.

A lot of things make your trousers go funny.

The centre-backs were the highlight tonight, good game to watch.

Will be a rough two weeks for them though, theyā€™ll be tested against Leckie, Nabbout, Tilio, Jakolis, Borello, Antonsson, Kittel, Brook, Ninkovic etc.
