So we’re assuming that Harper, I man very much involved in the deepest roots of football is incorrect, however a random forum dweller on SFCU knows more? Despite the fact that Segacic goes to training every single day and has interactions with the manager every single day, in which a phone call would be superfluous and he would probably be making the “signature” sign rather than anything else. That and it occurred before he was taken off at half time, after which he was pissed off, rather than before. Also pointing out the fact that International Players are also called up for the team, which would also make sense for that signal
But then again, you’re one of the many on here who seem to read endlessly negative connotations into the most benign of words and actions, it’s like watching the editors at News Ltd at work, finding the worst, most clickbaitworthy interpretation of any event.
A fish dies in the Hawksbury river - “HAWKESBURY HELL AS WOKE GREENIE POLICIES CAUSE MASS FISH DIE-OFFS!!! - NRL LARRIKIN’S VIEW WILL SHOCK THE NATION”
Let’s not pretend that Sega is happy with his game time this season, and won’t be exploring his options. Personally, I can’t see him signing an extension here if Uffy isn’t turfed.
My initial thought when he did the celebration was that it was a swipe at not getting picked for the Socceroos. We saw Botic and Milanovic do slightly passive aggressive celebrations too (funny that they all scored to make T. Popovic look foolish actually).
However the repost on instagram was a bit more dubious, and he may well be salty about getting hooked at half time on top of not getting picked for the Socceroos.
He has probably not thought about it this much as we have.
I was simply offering my differing interpretation. Maybe other people interpreted that way too, maybe not - people are free to take it or leave it as they please.
It’s clear that it was deliberately intended to mean something, although only Sega knows what.
Given there weren’t many talking points from the game and we’ve got the international break coming up, I think we should canvas some highly plausible meanings which disappointingly haven’t been discussed yet:
Sega is actually from a far away planet where football is exclusively played from the bench. He was uncomfortable starting a game and the celebration was a cry for help to fans that someone should phone his home planet so that they can come pick him up.
Sega and Uffy have developed a secret language of hand gestures which are used to relay tactical instructions and communications mid game. The gestures were to indicate to Uffy that he needed to come off as lunch was in the process of rapidly running through him. The laugh reacts on Insta confirm that disaster was averted, the public were none the wiser and he won man of the match!
Sega idolises Sydney fc bench hero Matt Simon. The goal celebration was in dedication to Simon and he attempted to perform his iconic shakka celebration. However, due to a congenital wrist issue, this celebration was performed at a 90degree angle.
Tbh - grain of salt. Did the APL go and ask the players why they did it? Or attribute quotes?
“Young guns in the Aleague banging down the doors of the Socceroos” is a much better narrative than “promising player frustrated with lack of opportunity”
