Round 25 - Sydney FC vs Brisbane - 10/8/20

Typical fucking strikers…

As I have often stated over the years I come from a rugby background as a kid with elite swimming the sport of my son. So, treat my query with the contempt it probably deserves.

As with others I have noted the downturn in our team since the break. I wonder, however, whether this is part of our preparation for the finals. In swimming training is tailored to reaching the peak of fitness/speed for the major meet of the year (eg Australian Championships). At other times you compete mostly while under heavy training load and then taper training towards that major meet.

Here we have known that we have the Plate won and that there is nothin riding on our results since the return. An ideal opportunity to play under heavy training load and taper while no one else has that opportunity as they play to make those finals or to get into the finals. Given the compression of the finals into such a short time period this could really work and give a distinct advantage.

Team sport with huge psychological factors. I don’t know if tapering/peaking etc is appropriate in the current situation.

But the current situation is rather unique.

You are correct teams do this type of training but I don’t think they would do that with such an already high workload.

I think you will find that the break has screwed us. We lost our momentum and energy while other teams have had time to have a good look at themselves and fix lots of their crap. We should still compete in the finals as we show some good sparks when we turn it on

Interesting thought but I guess the problem with a peak/taper sort of program is that we haven’t been at peak for such a long time that it’s going to be incredibly difficult to get back up to the peak we were up to throughout the bulk of the season.

I know I’m late to the party, but there is something special about Ivanovic.

I think you could argue we’ve done a bit of what wld has said in the sense that we’ve given more game time to fringe players along the way. Minutes to VDS, Ivanovic, Buhagier, Flottman, rotating LBs game to game is a bit of that. But its also true that our momentum seems a bit stalled and we’re battling a bit to get up for games with nothing on the line. You’d hope we pick up for finals but current form probably suggests we arent going to be the team winning on the final day of the season.

I’ll put another possibility out there. Are our tactics suited to playing in hotter conditions, such as scoring the first goal, then generally sitting back and hitting on the break as the second half wears on? Now the conditions are a lot cooler, opposition teams can apply higher-intensity tactics and be able to keep playing that way for longer. Notice in the summer how a lot of teams can have a good 30-45 minutes against us, but run out of steam in the second half or even earlier.

You make a good point… That’s it ! Someone get Danny on the blower to James Johnson get the season switched back to summer

Problem is with peaking for finals is, do we know how to?

We’ve been consistant in this Arnold/Corica era. We treat every game the same from Pre-season to GF.

So what you’re saying, is that together with Sydney’s involvement in 5G and Corona, we’ve also heavily invested in Global Warming technology?

That’s right and Traktovenko is clearly an anagram of Rothschild.

I think a lot of the issue stems from the season being a foregone conclusion after the resumption thus the players are having a hard time getting up for the game. Compared that to our opposition who have been playing for finals positions then it’s hardly surprising that the performances have been flat.
That the better players since resumption have been (other than Ninko) the young kids trying to impress with the likes of McGowan, Zullo, Kosta & even Alfie struggling to perform appears to be a motivational thing to me.
Once the finals start our form should turn around.

5G didn’t exist before Sydney FC.
COVID-19 didn’t exist before Sydney FC.
The Climate Crisis didn’t exist before Sydney FC.

Just saying.

Another thought… most of the teams we have played against have had their players in “camp” since the resumption of the competition. Maybe this has been a positive effect and should not be underestimated.

That’s entirely possible though Jets haven’t been in camp and they are looking great at the moment.

Yeah but the Jets almost always look almost great.
