Round of 16: Argentina vs Australia - 4/12/2022

I get the feeling he’s the type of cunt that would just enjoy the attention.

Yeah, that

At least we can go back to having the world feed for commentary now. Silver linings and all that.

What is a Grabara and why do I hate it?

Definitely shades of ‘06 this morning, although that side was probably experienced enough to be smarter in the crucial moments (and hamstrung by Guus playing for extra time) while this one played within its limitations and in doing so exceeded the sum of its parts by a mile.

First goal is just Messi doing Messi things, even from a recycled set piece he loses McGree by almost running into Baccus (so McGree passes him on), then just casually rolls it through legs into the corner. It looks simple enough cos it’s such a stereotypical Messi goal, but it is quality.

From there we needed to hold them out until HT, and did relatively comfortably. Then we needed to reset and hold them out again until fresh legs, the part that really burns about Ryan’s mistake is that Ratboy had just highlighted the subs were in waiting next to the 4th official, ahead of Arnie’s usual timetable. We go from 1-0 down, still in it and about to give it a red hot go, to virtually game over before the subs have even stepped on the park.

Big degree of fortune about Goodwin’s strike, but we were probably always going to need something like that to go our way to stand a chance. Then Aziz goes berko and Kuol nearly salvages it, huge save from Martinez. Ugh. Don’t think Ryan had an actual save to make until injury time, really stings that we’ve been done on such fine margins.

Shit.

Would have liked for Behich to go down in the box in the first half because he actually got a shove in the shoulder. You never know. Oh man that last shot by Kuol, soooooooooo close.

Anyway, the boys & the coaching staff did amazing. They can all hold their heads very, very high.

I was coming to terms with it, 2-0 being a respectable losing scoreline, and then we scored. Fucking hell. And then we could have equalised. It was so far beyond my expectations. Honestly I’m 5% gutted, 95% thrilled.

I saw the Argentinian national team celebrating a match-winning 98’ save against Australia in the knock-out stages of the World Cup.

And I got to watch that at a live site with 25,000 people cheering on every moment, and thousands more unable to get in outside.

What a run.

Never thought I’d see the day when Argentina would try to run the clock down against us. But we were outclassed with moments of magic and thats all it takes at this level.

Mammoth effort, but most importantly it has given life to the national team moving forward and renewed optimism.

I feel that the ending left people disappointed but hopeful where I was at.

With so many up for the game and so many not being able to get into the main site, I’m grateful that we were contenders till the death and people really got into it. Glad it wasn’t the Peach strudel most of us were probably dreading.

Onwards and upwards.
