Russia v Ukraine - WWIII or Putin's cliff dive?

Very wishful thinking mate. Hope you are right but fear you are not.

Different scenario, but frighteningly similar to Europe 90years ago. Megalomaniac in power.
A reason: re-uniting oppressed citizens with their parent country.
Stated eventual aim: living space v restoring empire. ’
Enemy of state to distract local population: , jews v risk from encroaching NATO.
Lots of differences, but lots of similarities.
Is Ukraine Putin’s Austria? Will the baltic states be his Czeko?
He has learnt from history and I suspect he thinks he can dodge Hitler’s errors and overreach.
Can the West also learn from history and counter this maniac without all out war. A real worry, especially as this recent period of “relative” peace we have all enjoyed is unusual not he norm.
Learning from history is so important.
I wished I hadn’t slacked off so much in the subject at high school.

Probably figuring out to write another book of tosh to sell to rubes.

he’s already been very open about wanting to reform the USSR. He already has Byelorussia, he’ll install a puppet regime in Ukraine and then the next steps are Poland, the Baltics and the rest. It’ll all be dependent on the current response. The annexation of Crimea and the "rebel’ groups were all a test to see the response from the west. If there’s not a strong response now, it’ll be dominos

And strong repose will probably be met with disbelief, real or faked.

All the while, Xi Jinping can just point and laugh at the very real scenario of the two other superpowers fighting and weakening each other.

I like that the new Chinese ambassador is talking of rebuilding ties with Australia.

A brilliant move by the Chinese to take away the threat of the Chinese being the villains and linked to Labor with an election looming.

Best move yet to punish this idiot PM who insulted a sensitive world power and ruined many of our export markets with his stupid megaphone diplomacy, trying to be Trump’s best friend, instead of constructive quiet diplomacy letting them know when they have gone too far.

I hope any future government can deal intelligently (for a change) on the world’s geopolitical stage, much better than the stupidity we have seen in the recent past.

If not, other countries will run rings around us and eat us for breakfast.

What a cockhead.

UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has told military personnel that Vladimir Putin has gone “full tonto” over Ukraine, adding that the British army ‘kicked the backside of Tsar Nicholas I in 1853 in Crimea’ and ‘can always do it again’.

It’ll never happen probably, but would be good to see FIFA ban Russia over this invasion.

Also ironic one of Putin’s justification for the invasion is the de-nazification of Ukraine.

Donbas etc was the Czech (Sudentenland) equivalent and obviously completely fallacious. Austria slipped into the Third Reich with a happy grin and wink - their own cleric fascist regime had completely hobbled the very powerful Socialist Party.

The difference is that the Ukrainians are fighting and the Czechoslovaks largely laid down their weapons. They clearly should have rejected Munich and appeasement and fought the Germans. So maybe the outcome of the Ukrainians will be different.

If not, if Putin remains hungry, in 2022-4, Poland (or its Baltic neighbours) will be the Poland of 1939 - the final trigger for Allied response. Indeed decades of Russification of eg Baltic States but also perhaps Moldova set them up for the same pretext (‘genocide’) that Putin has been using in eg Ukraine, but also Georgia.

Saves us from further embarrasment. Poland should slap our lot silly regardless in Moscow or not.

Some big parallels (but also some big differences) to the Russo-Georgia War in 2008. Wonder if it’ll go similar or not.

Heavy fighting reported over night in the Chernobyl area, with the Russkies eventually taking Prypat and now hold the Chernobyl plant.

Something tells me that shooting and dropping a bunch of bombs in that region just doesn’t end well…

Wasn’t it the Russians who fucked Chernobyl in the first place? Let them hang there for a while

So current reports as of this morning indicate that Ukraine is losing, but they’re putting up a huge fight. Multiple photos of downed jets and destroyed tanks. The paratroopers that landed near Kiev have been taken out completely and reports of multiple Russian units being forced to surrender. On top of this, 10,000 assault rifles have been distributed to civilians in Kiev in preparation for a war there. Credit to him, the Ukrainian President has stayed where he is, and is refusing to leave.

Ireland and Poland are amongst the countries that have rescinded the need for Visa’s to allow Ukrainian refugees entry. Protests throughout the world in front of Russian embassies, with a fair few being egged and had paint thrown on them. Russians outside of the embassy in Israel have been filmed burning their passports. 700 arrested in Russia protesting the way, with the biggest protest looking to be in St Petersburg.

Poland, Sweden and Czech Republic have indicated they’re not willing to play their next FIFA qualifiers in Russia and have demanded they be moved.

Ill start paying attention when the seppos starting assembling forces in Anchorage.

Well UEFA have now taken the Champions League final from Russia.

It’s a start.

Male citizens 18-60 are not allowed to leave the country.

The refeering in the Betis v Zenit game today suggests UEFA are trying to get the teams out as easily as possible.

Further to this, new sanctions have been brought in against Russia. Germany and Italy (the c*nts) were against removing Russia from swift. Apparently human lives don’t really mean too much when it comes to lost money.

Interestingly enough, Putin is the only high target in Russia that has had almost no sanctions put in against him… Obviously in an effort to drive a wedge
