Are there any airport / duty free whiskies worth picking up?
Never really one to have been bothered with duty free but it’s been a while since I’ve been through one so would like to make it worthwhile.

Just had a quick look, and nothing jumped out as being a bargain.
I’d just grab a big bottle of something you usually drink
Have a quick squiz online and they have two Glenlivet Nadurra for $109 at the moment. That is a very decent deal.
just double check online against normal prices. I found a fair few times that the price wasn’t any better in duty free than the shops.
Be aware that bottles are generally a litre at Duty Free rather than 700ml. I find you are paying bottle shop prices but get an extra 300ml.
In my experience Australian airports are not as cheap for good whisky so if you are transiting somewhere it might be worth looking there.
Pre Covid at Changi we would usually get 1L bottles of Glenmorangie Tayne for around $80 each which is a cracking deal.
Agreed. I never buy going out of Australia. I always see what the returning airport has (also a good way of getting rid of excess currency). If it is cheaper I buy there. If not I buy when I arrive back to Sydney before exiting customs.
I would be the same. A fair bit of the alcohol will be cheaper overseas in any case. Whisky is generally cheaper in the UK, vodka in Eastern Europe etc. Better off buying stuff there for drinking than lugging it around for an entire trip.
Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Going uk then Middle East then Aus so will have a look at the uk range for a good deal on a favourite. Wouldn’t think Qatar would have much of a selection.
A hypocrisy that will shock no one is that the big ME hubs have a huge duty free alcohol selection.
You will have no issue finding whisky in Doha airport.
I shouldn’t be surprised really. I’d rather shove coins up my arse sideways then spend a cent in Qatar though.
Flying Qatar if transiting through Doha though?
I have always found Duty Free to be no better than Dan Murphy’s.
On some products I would agree with you on others there are some great deals to be had but mostly not from Australian ports.
There are also a range of options you can’t get here.
We flew Emirates and stopped over in Dubai, Warsaw to Sydney. Initially I didn’t have time to shop around as it was a quick stop over, but then the plane had technical issues and missed the cutoff into Sydney. Spent 6hours in Dubai airport. The first 2 were spent meticulously going through their whisky and comparing prices. I was in heaven! Only thing that screwed me over, was I’d stocked up on Polish vodka so we were close to the maximum amount of alcohol into the country.
Talked into a Highland Park by a bartender who said it’s not peated, now stuck drinking an ashtray and longing to get home to the current rotation of Oban, Glendronach and Aberlour.
Probably past its best.
Good luck in your search for someone to share.
