Streets of our town - the Sydney thread

Doubt the AFP have the capability to deal with a bomb threat in Sydney. It’ll be NSWPOL, or TAG-E if they learnt their lesson from the Lindt siege.

Didn’t Hazem El Masri get in big trouble once for talking about bombs while on an airplane?

From memory one of the victory’s Brazilian players had a moment didn’t they?

Said “Sim bom” in response to an attendants question or something. Was it Fabinho?

The Australian Federal Police take a pretty dim view on those who make comments or joke about bombs whilst on planes or in the terminal.

I had only been working at the airport for about 6 weeks when a bloke who was as arrogant as they came through the security checkpoint. He was some high investment banker or something. Came through, annoyed at being held up in line. Made a snarky remark to my colleague about “I’m late for my flight, better not touch my bag, I got a bomb in it”. Thought he’d say it at the top of his voice as well.

The look on his face as he was led away in handcuffs was excellent.

Speaking later on to a couple of the Qantas girls he was a platinum FF, all the perks. He was blacklisted from flying with all the major carriers within Australia, and by default a large swathe of international carriers too.

Because what he had been blacklisted for, he was banned from entering the United States and most EU nations too.

One of those moments you go home with a giant smile on your face.

He sounds like someone that Errol Parker would have an absolute field day writing about.

yeah bomb threats are always taken with the utmost seriousness. It’s fairly well known and you’d have to be an idiot to make a bomb joke in an airport.

Been through several international airports where it’s signposted not to do so. And you just know when stuff like that is deemed necessary to signpost it’s because there’s been more than one fuckwit already do it.

Had one guy ask me once what would happen if there was an active shooter or if a bombdid go off in the terminal.

I told him if you see me running, try to keep up. He seemed genuily concerned that a lowly screening security guard wasn’t going to go all John McClane in such event.

I’m running the Bondi to Manly Ultra this Saturday.

80km along the coastal walk route completed around 2020.

Starts at 5.15am, 14.5 hour time limit.

Just finished the race briefing and I’m shitting bricks. My hammies are a little tight from overtraining, and it will probably take until the morning of the race to be fully match fit.

If nothing else it will be a fantastic opportunity to see the harbour foreshore and the coastal edges of our fine city.

I’ll post some pics if I make it back alive.

I’ve done the Mosman to Manly section before and that’s quite nice. At least you’ll have a good backdrop for your masochism.

That’s insane! Best of luck.

I run half marathons and that’s hard enough!

Yeah, I did a few pre COVID and my body decided to quit on me so I’d put the 20kg back on and not run any more.

I cannot imagine doing 80km…

That’s a fucking great run, enjoy it. Settle into an easy rhythm and enjoy the views.

Feel free to live update us on how the hammies feel.

Just got home from the run.

Seriously, Sydney is far more stunning than most people think. I felt like a tourist and snapped lots of photos.

I highly recommend the Bondi To Manly walk. Split over 4 days, eat at cafes and restaurants along the way, and sleep in pubs.

I will post a photo montage tomorrow.

Cheers for all the encouragement peeps!
