I think the law is that if the defender is deemed to have made a deliberate attempt at playing the ball then a new phase of play begins negating the offside. Clearly a ridiculous law as 9 times out of 10 the defender is only making the attempt due to the presence of the attacker.
My opinion is that any attacker in the middle āthirdā (say the width of the 18) when the ball goes there who is in offside position is always interfering with play and should be flagged offside. Iād excuse players who canāt play for the ball if they are for example on the ground.
The offside rule is supposed to be there to discourage goal hanging. As it now is they can goal hang to their heartās content and pick a moment to come out of that and play the ball when they have been made onside by some event as above, or move briefly inside for a pass to be made, or leave it to someone else. But they are often pretty much goal hanging.
So charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. Will be interesting to see how United play this, he still has 2.5 years left on his contract.
Do they play him and risk a PR disaster? Pay out his contract and release him? Sell him on in the summer?
Regarding the first option - A certain Arsenal player has just had his bail extended whilst under investigation of the rape of two women and they continue to play him with surprisingly little backlash.
Those recordings were pretty damningā¦
Edit: Apparently he is also back living with the girl he was accused of assaulting. I guess the charges were dropped as she was unwilling to testify against him.
Yeah charges were dropped when key witnesses withdrew from giving evidence
United are now opening a formal investigation to determine how move forward (they didnāt do this during the police investigation as they didnāt want it to be prejudicial). Having seen who EVH is building his squad, Iād be surprised if he is welcomed back
As for the Arsenal player - was he as publicly named and the audio leaked? The shocking nature of that left United nowhere to go (and rightly so)
So greenwood breached his bail condition of not contacting the victim, by living with her, and the police knew and did nothing about it until the CPS had to drop the case. Ridiculous
