The motorsport thread

I’m very late to the Party (thankfully this pandemic is letting me spend a lot of time watching netflix) but Drive to Survive is absolutely sensational!

Yeah, really enjoyed both seasons of this. The Riccardo opening to S02E03 is outstanding.

He needs his own show

:rofl::rofl:

He was initially suspended from iRacing first and people kept trying to say how there was much worse going on in the iRacing community than him saying a racist word.

This is a good take, particularly the final couple of paragraphs, on the Kyle Larson incident.

First race of the F1 season. Verstappen out. Vettel stupidly running into the man who’s replacing him at Ferrari next year. Race has already delivered. Pity that Danny Ric is out. Williams may well be eyeing out a point or two.

What a fucking crazy last 15 laps. Fucking wow. Where to start!?

EDIT: Hamilton off the podium after his penalty for taking Albon off (again), and Norris putting in fastest lap on the last lap. LMAO

F1 options outside of Kayo?

It was meant to be on ten or one last night. Too late for me to worry much thou.

F1 is really good with the highlights so I just watch them on YouTube over breakfast the next morning.

They’re usually around 7 mins long which is about how much interesting things are in your typical F1 race these days.

I don’t really count Channel Ten. They have ads every 5 laps or so, and usually for a 1-2 minutes per break. In their “highlights” package of the German GP last year, for example, they still showed ads every few minutes and decided to miss Hamilton’s brush with the wall and his subsequent 1 min pitstop where mechanics were fumbling over each other to get tyres and whatever else.

TL;DR … fuck Channel Ten.

Also worth pointing out the Formula 1 Youtube channel even shows the odd classic F1 race in full. Canada 2011 is one of a few examples. Other Youtubers have put out older races from the 80s and 90s. Those can be quite fun to watch. James Hunt was a lot of fun to listen to.

The no podium thing is shit. Lando Norris would have tore the thing apart last night.

I’m very hopefully for the Lando and Danny Ric show next year.

With the Mercedes engine McLaren will be joining the big 3 next season. Lando & Danny Ric podium shenanigans are a given.

Apart from Ferrari going full Ferrari it was quite the uneventful race last night.

Not surprising considering its the second race at the same track in consecutive weeks, with the same tyre compounds. With any luck, they correct that issue for Silverstone to differentiate the race weekends a little bit.

Qualifying this weekend was easily the biggest highlight. Lots of skill shown in wet conditions, along with some intrigue over how it was going to turn out. The leaderboard was changing constantly.

The highlights made it look quite exciting!

Compared to last weekend this race was always going to be a come down. The middle stage was a bit boring but the closing laps were quite good with Last Lap Lando doing his thing again.
Ricciardo definitely pulled the right reign going to McLaren next season. Their car this year looks to be pretty close to the Red Bull but is let down by the power unit. With a Mercedes bolted in to it next year it should be very competitive.

Renault’s qualifying pace seems to be pretty decent but reliability, as well as consistent race pace, are still big question marks. Ricciardo’s car reacted brilliantly to the medium tyre but really struggled on the softs, when I really felt fifth, or even fourth, was for the taking at around half distance.

McLaren will have an interesting situation next year. Switching engine supplier means they have to use development tokens to get a new engine in the car, so it will give them less of an ability to upgrade other parts of the car next year.
